FOR FRIDAY, JANUARY 1ST, 2021
The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Today is the first day of the New Year. The tradition of celebrating New Year’s Day began over 4,000 years ago in ancient Babylon. During that era, the calendar changed over on the first day of Spring. In 153 BC, the Roman Senate changed the day for New Years to January 1st.
Today New Year’s Day signifies a time of new beginnings and resolutions. There are many traditions and festivals that take place on New Year’s around the world. Traditionally People in California decorate carriages with flowers during the Tournament of Roses Parade in order to celebrate the ripening of the orange crop. In the Netherlands, people eat donuts because it will bring them good fortune.
Making New Year’s resolutions is another popular tradition found around the world. Decide what yours will be e and share your best wishes for the year ahead! Happy New Year!
If you can’t see the bright side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering it will be happier…
Alfred Lord Tennyson
I don’t make many resolutions for the New Year anymore, but every day I try to do the best I can to make each new day better than the day before. I try to plan my work and work the plan. We all need lists to remind us of what needs to done, and I do that in order to keep my focus. It’s easy to get off track and do nothing if I don’t.
I have a new calendar and use it well. Marking any special occasions on it so I don’t forget a birthday or anniversary. Hard as I try, I still forgot now and then. I’m only human and make mistakes. I keep on trying to do better. I think that’s all any of us can do. Heaven knows I’m far from perfect.
Now that the holidays are over, there will be plenty to do and I need to get my house in order and get organized too. One of my worst habits is letting the junk mail pile up instead of throwing it out when it comes. This year I vow to do better with that. There is no reason it should be laying around cluttering things up.
I usually make a pork roast and sauerkraut dinner for the family to enjoy on this day, but today I’ll be eating it by myself. We’ll be gathering this afternoon on a Zoom call instead. My mom and Dad started the tradition of pork roast and sauerkraut, Dad always said it brought good luck for the New Year.
Pork Roast and Sauerkraut
Makes 6 servings
32 oz. sauerkraut, drained
3 apples, pealed, sliced
1 tsp caraway seed
1/4 cup apple juice ore water
2 to 3 lb. boneless pork roast,
6 red potatoes, cut in half
1 tbsp. Dijon mustard
In slow cooker, mix sauerkraut, apples , caraway seed and apple juice. With spoon make indentation in middle of mixture, place roast in center.
Arrange potato halves around roast on sauerkraut mixture. Spread 1 tbsp. mustard over roast.Cover and cook on low setting 7 to 8 hours.
Remove roast from cooker, place on serving platter. cut into slices, arrange potatoes around slices and serve with sauerkraut mixture.
I will also make some gravy from a packaged mix to serve with it. I’ll eat this with some corn and applesauce on the side.
I managed to see the New Year in and was awake when the clock struck midnight. I was reading a good book that kept me awake and and had the TV on to see the ball drop in NYC. I went to bed shortly after that though, and woke up refreshed and ready for a new start this morning. It will certainly be a better year ahead. The worst may not be over, but eventually it’s going to get better. Don’t give up.the best is yet to come.
The pictures today are of the Pie in Face game that we played at DS#5’s house on New Years eve a few years ago. It was fun and we laughed a lot. Good times remembered are wonderful right now.
I hope you all have a GREAT start to this new year. Happy Thursday!

Live, laugh and love: the best recipe for a Happy New Year!
Happy ☺ New Year 🎊🎉
Love the photos. A few years ago one of the things we did at Christmas was all buy a new game that we could all play on Christmas Day. Someone brought this same one. We had fun with it and I think the photos were the best part. Happy New Year Ma!
Turns out we're not doing pork and kraut today. There's still so many leftovers in the fridge, and Tom did a big roast in the slow cooker last night ... then fixed an enormous breakfast this morning, fit for a lumberjack. I'd better get moving in time to the clock!
Thanks for taking us along on your journey through 2021!
Good for you Ma that you made it to midnight :) I tried to but fell asleep around 10:30 p.m. We did see the ball drop in NYC at 10 p.m. on our local news and that's when we said Happy New Year to each other :)
That pork roast sounds delicious and so super easy to make in the crock pot. Putting it on my list to make sometime this month!
