ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Today is International Literacy Day which celebrates and promotes literacy all over the world.
The day was created by the United Nations and is promoted by the UN's UNESCO. Literacy is a global issue, and hence the UN takes an active role in promoting it. They do recognize and celebrate that billions of people are literate. But, they go further to promote literacy, and to seek improved literacy rates in every country of the world. The first celebration was on September 8, 1965.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.
Charles W. Eliot
I am very thankful that I am able to read and write. It’s something we often take for granted but there are those that don’t know how to read or to write.
I can still remember the hours spent at the kitchen table practicing my abc’s and learning how to write my name. Once I knew how to read, a whole new world opened up to me and my love of reading has never stopped.
So far it’s been a great week for getting things done here in the house and today will not be much different. We have promises of more rain coming our way.
Thankfully I am FINALLY enjoying my good cup of morning coffee. Due to the efforts of my hero sister. She and her hubby stopped by yesterday to see if I’d managed to get my Keurig fixed, which I hadn’t, and she managed to get it unplugged for me. She is definitely my hero! It seems there are tiny holes in the pins that pierce the K cups which can become clogged with coffee grounds and that was the problem. I couldn’t find the hole but she did. I cannot say THANK YOU enough. Believe me when I say, my cup of coffee never tasted so good. I can put the instant mocha/cappuccino back in the cupboard for a while. There’s nothing like a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
I hope you all have a FANTASTIC Friday!
PRAYER REQUEST
DDIL#4 has asked for prayers for the safety of her family in Florida. I saw on the news this morning that the approaching hurricane had been down graded to a category 4, but that is still a mighty powerful hurricane. May the dear Lord protect all those in the path of destruction.
I also read in the morning news that Mexico suffered a magnitude 8 earthquake. My prayers go out to them too, along with those still trying to recover from the Harvey in Texas.
May the dear Lord bless them all!
WHAT’S NEW IN THE KITCHEN
There is a food holiday to celebrate every day of the year!
National Date Nut Bread Day is today. It's the perfect bread for the season. It contains nuts and sugar, but is not heavy on the sugar. Date nut bread is quite popular. You can make it yourself, or buy some at the bakery. It makes for a delicious sandwich with cream cheese in the middle.
At my house Date Nut cookies have been more popular than the bread is, they are one of my favorites for Christmas, but I found a recipe for the bread that sounds very tasty. Now that our temps have cooled off it’s nice to turn the oven on again.
Date Nut Bread
2 cups chopped dates
4 tablespoons softened butter
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup hot brewed coffee
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 3/4 cups Flour
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease an 8 1/2 inch by 4 1/2 inch loaf pan. Place the dates, butter, baking soda, salt, and brown sugar in a mixing bowl. Pour the hot coffee into the bowl, stirring to combine. Allow the mixture to cool for 15 minutes. Add the egg, vanilla, baking powder, and flour, beating gently until smooth. Stir in the walnuts.
Pour the batter into the pan, gently tapping the pan on the counter to settle the batter. Bake the bread for 45 to 55 minutes. You can tent the loaf gently with foil after 30 minutes, to prevent over browning. Remove the bread from the oven; a cake tester or toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean.
After 10 minutes, gently turn the bread out of the pan onto a rack to cool. Cool completely before slicing. Wrap airtight, and store at room temperature for several days; freeze for longer storage.

Yea that the coffee machine is fixed! I know we run vinegar through it every so often to clean it out. Praying for all involved in Irma, plus the aftermath of Harvey, plus the earthquakes. Lots of "stuff" going on in our world these days.
Love to read too. Always opens up a whole different world to explore when one learns to read.

Hi Pam, I have been a great lover of books since I first learned to read. I am a lover of words and writing as well. I had deplorable handwriting in early school, so my mother made me take lessons in penmanship, which helped a great deal, even if I did not appreciate them so much at the time! Happy you were able to get your coffee maker sorted. Like you I am praying for all those in the world who are suffering at the time, with the fires, earthquakes hurricanes, etc. So much prayer needed. Love and hugs, xoxo
YAY for your Keurig's resurrection! Little things like a GOOD cup of coffee mean a lot.
Date nut bread is one of my hubby's favorite things in the world. A few years ago - after nearly a decade of hearing him talk about it - I made some. He was so happy, it made me a little ashamed for not having done it earlier. :)
Happy to join with you in prayer for your DIL's family ... and all in the path of nature's wrath.
