ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
SUNDAY, JUNE 13TH, 2021
The moments our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Today is Sewing Machine day which celebrates the sewing machine that was first patented in 1790. Since then the sewing machine has become one of the most iconic symbols of the industrial revolution. It represents the transition from traditional hand made goods to automated production.
For many decades the sewing machine was a standard household appliance, but it is no longer considered a domestic necessity. Although the heyday of the sewing machine has come and gone, we can still recognize it’s significance in our history. Without this important invention, the process for making clothing and any sewn item, would be extremely tedious. Each article would have to be sewn by hand, stitch by stitch.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Sewing small pieces together gives me a peaceful heart and a quilt to wrap you with, my love.

I’m thankful that I still have a sewing machine. I bought mine when I was first married, but it still works. It’s had a few repairs over the years but as long as I keep it clean and oiled it still does a good job. At one time I made clothes for me and the children, but now it’s mostly used for making repairs.
I won’t be doing any sewing today but do have fond memories of my maternal grandmother teaching me how to sew on a tredle sewing machine. You made it work by pushing a pedal below back and forth. You had to multitask and put your metal to the pedal as well as sew at the same time. These days they are electric and I simply push the pedal attached to it to make it work.
She was an excellent seamstress and tought me well. She wouldn’t accept the easy way out and believed everything had to be done step by step. I probably did as much tearing out as I did stitching. We’d iron the fabic before cutting out a pattern and then pin it together before doing the permanent stitches with the machine. We’d pin and tuck to make sure it all came together the way it should.
One thing she wouldn’t do was to sew on a Sunday because she firmly believe it was a day for rest. I remember how excited I was making my first dress and how disappointed I was when she said we couldn’t do it on a Sunday. I never thought of it as work, but she did and refused to let me sew on Sunday.
Today I’m going to a party at DD’s house for her son’s birthday. We still have a chance of showers, but we hope they’ll stay away. I think most of them will be gone by afternoon, It’s to be a pool party and all the kids will want to swim. As for me I’ll probably find a comfortable chair and just sip on a cold drink and enjoy watching them all.
My Sewing Machine sits in my craft nook and that is what the pictures are of today. It’s small but it works.
I hope you have a RELAXING Sunday!

Sorry no pictures of my sewing machine today. It sits in my small craft nook.
Females in my family knew how to sew. We learned at home and at 4H. Grandma and Mom could stitch up a storm, with or without a pattern.
My mother sewed beautifully, and I so wish I'd been more charitable about the school clothes she crafted. There was a period all I wanted was something 'store bought.' As most of my classmates, I took sewing in Home Economics, but my heart just wasn't in it. Matter of fact, my best friend had to finish my dress the night before finals ... and she's still never let me forget. Ha!
My mother didn't sew and I can't recall anyone in my family who did. I took it in home ec way back in high school but never did anything with it after that. I wouldn't have a clue where to even start these days.
I hope the rain stayed far away today for the party!
Love this!! My Grandma taught me to sew, also! She gave me her little Singer sewing machine when I was in the 8th grade, and I took Home Ec. I've sewn clothes, and doll clothes, quilts, and oodles of craft items. I taught one of my granddaughters to sew, and bought her, her first sewing machine. How did the party go? Good I hope!! Have a great week! xxoo
Why didn't I buy a sewing machine when my son was in Scouts? I sewed every patch on his uniform BY HAND. Bout killed me! LOL!!
Why didn't I buy a sewing machine? I am a CHEAPSKATE!! LOL!!
Have a great week, MA! xx
