ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
THURSDAY, MAY 5TH, 2022
The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Today is Cinco de Mayo which in Spanish means the fifth of May and it’s a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition to other parts of Mexico. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragonza Sequin.
The Battle was important for at least 2 reasons. First although considerably outnumbered, the Mexicans defeated a much better equipped French army. This battle was significant in that the 4,000 Mexican soldiers were greatly outnumbered by the well equipped French army of 8,000 that had not been defeated for almost 50 years. Second it was significant because since the Battle of Puebla no country in the Americas has been invaded by any army from another continent.
This is not an obligatory federal holiday in Mexico, but is a holiday that can be observed voluntarily. While Cinco de May has limited significance in Mexico, the date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexico’s Independance Day which actually is September 16th, the most important patriotic holiday in Mexico.
If you can't see the bright side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Cinco de Mayo has come to represent the contributions that Mexican Americans and all Hispanics have made to America.
Joe Baca
I’m not Mexican but will celebrate today as I love Mexican food. It’s a day I usually make Spanish rice. I will also don my party hat which is pictured above . It was a souvenir from a birthday long ago. We went to a Mexican restaurant and they sang happy birthday to me and put this hat on my head. Somehow I wound up bringing it home with me. Now when it’s time to party, I put it on.
There is going to be a party in our family on Saturday. Maybe I should take it along for my little granddaughter to put on. She is having her first communion Saturday and her folks are having us over to their house after church. Tomorrow I’ll be making a cake for her special day and I’ll share pictures of that on Friday. It’s become a tradition for me to make this cake for every 1st Communion in the family.
It’s a day to party so I’ll put my hat on and dance and clap my hands ! The pictures today are from a Cinco de Mayo back in 2018 and it was also another 1st communion in honor of our Lucky Guy. I actually made 3 cakes that year as Mr. Wonderful and our Little Lad also made their first communions too!
I hope you all have a GREAT day. Happy Thursday!
COUNTING MY GIFTS
There is something magnificent in having a country to love.
James Russell Lowell
Counting at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for. There is truly is always something to be thankful for.
10,216.for the 5th of May, it’s a party day!
10,217. for a tradition that carries on in the family
10,218. for my hat, loaded with good memories!
Enter into His courts with thanksgiving — and in His presence is fullness of Joy!
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Almighty and eternal God,
Protect our military
as they discharge their duties
with the shield of your strength,
may the power of your love
enable them to return home in safety
that with all who love them
they may ever praise you for your loving care.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters and EMT’s.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
GOD BLESS YOU!

I'm celebrating May the 5th!
So are we! Pep Le Monkee loves Cinco de Mayo. Have a fun day.
I love your traditions -- both the hat and the First Communion cake. I think (hope) we're celebrating, not with Mexican food but BBQ ribs; Tom doesn't often drink, but he may enjoy a margarita. Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Enjoyed the visit, I had forgotten the meaning behind Cinco De Mayo and had looked it up just before reading. Had I waited you would have saved me time. Thanks and we enjoyed the pictures and yes the hat too!
Love from Florida ;-)
