Jared Kirtland was born on November 10, 1793, in Wallingford, Connecticut. He was a naturalist, a physician, and the founder of the Cleveland Academy of Natural Sciences, a forerunner of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and the Western Reserve University School of Medicine. His father was a representative of the Connecticut Land Company and moved to Poland, Ohio, in 1803. Jared remained in Connecticut to gain an education. He eventually graduated from Yale Medical School. In 1823, he moved to Poland, Ohio, where he established a medical practice.
Kirtland served from 1828 to 1834 in the Ohio legislature. His true love, however, was natural science and horticulture, not politics. He participated in the Ohio Geological Survey of 1837 and was responsible for zoological aspects of the report.
Kirtland also played an important role in medical education during the mid 1800s. In 1834, he accepted a position at the Medical College of Ohio, teaching the theory and practice of medicine. In 1842, Kirtland took a position at Willoughby College. When the college moved to Cleveland and became the Cleveland Medical College in 1843, Kirtland was one of the original faculty members. He remained with the college until 1864, when he retired from teaching.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
I think you might dispense with half your doctors if you would only consult Dr. Sun more.
Henry Ward Beecher
It’s true that fresh air and sunshine do keep us healthier. I think that is why so many colds and flu hit us this time of year. We are used to being outside a lot more and then all the sudden we are cooped up inside with the windows closed in order to keep warm.
Every year it seems you see more illnesses when the weather turns gloomier and colder. Sunshine is by far my preference. When I was raising children the doctor said to make sure they got outside for at least 20 minutes every day no matter what the weather. If you’ve got warm coats and boots even the rainy days can be fun. More and more I’m staying indoors and I need to follow this good advice and get outside for a little every day.
Even on a cloudy day the sun is still there. We may not see it, but we can still benefit from it. And if we’re outdoors for extended periods of time sunscreen is often advised.
After church today, I’ll be going to our sweet sugar AB’s 1st birthday party. Her mom says she is walking on her own now and finding out that she can reach and pull things off the table. The fun is about to begin !
I hope you all have a relaxing and restful Sunday!
COUNTING MY GIFTS
A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor's book.
Irish Proverb
I have counted at least 3 things I'm thankful for this past year and have now reached my 1000 gifts. I'm not stopping, but will continue on counting. There is always, always something to be thankful for.
1118. for fresh air and sunshine
1119. for another birthday to celebrate
1120. for my good health
Enter into His courts with thanksgiving — and in His presence is fullness of Joy!
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Lord, hold our troops in
your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us
in our time of need. I ask this in the
name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT's
GOD BLESS YOU !

All cute Christmas pictures Ma. I too do believe it is good to get outside daily no matter what the temps might be. I did the same with my kids when they were younger, even in the cold days we would try to get out to take a walk around the block or go to the park if it wasn't too cold, etc. I know my mom said of my dad that if he thought he was catching a cold, he would try to take a long walk and sometimes that helped him not to get sick. So there is definitely benefits to the sun and fresh air :)
betty
