ON THE BRIGHT SIDE

It's SUNDAY…
We had a green Christmas here at my house. Snow hit the Midwest but not here at all. I’ve really enjoyed my nice relaxing weekend and will be going off to church today as usual.
The week ahead will be a quiet one as there is little on my calendar besides work for sure. I have this coming Friday off for New Years so it’ll be another short work week. I’ll be making my annual pork roast and sauerkraut for dinner that day, so those in my family that are able to come over are welcome for sure. Dinner will be around 5 in the evening.
I am hoping for some company to help me eat some of these wonderful goodies around my house.

The 3rd Day of Christmas is The Feast of the Holy Family. Which is always celebrated on the Sunday after Christmas. What family or faith community can't benefit from reflecting upon the Holy Family? This is not the time to reflect upon a perfect family, but to ask ourselves how we might be blessed to reflect upon Joseph, Mary and Jesus

NEW IN THE KITCHEN
The picture above is of the delicious Christmas Stolen that was part of my bakery finds this past week. So today I’ll share a little history about the Christmas Stolen
A Stollen is a loaf shaped fruitcake, powdered with icing sugar on the outside. The cake is usually made with chopped candied fruit and/or dried fruit, nuts and spices. Stollen is a traditional German cake, usually eaten during the Christmas season
Stollen is a bread-like fruitcake made with yeast, water and flour, and usually with zest added to the dough. Candied orange peel and candied citrus peel, raisins and almonds and different spices such as cardamom and cinnamon are added. Other ingredients, such as milk, sugar, butter, salt, rum, eggs, vanilla, other dried fruits and nuts and marzipan may also be added to the Stollen dough. Except for the fruit added, the dough is quite low in sugar. The finished cake is sprinkled with icing sugar. The traditional weight of a Stollen is around 4.4 pounds (2 kg), but smaller sizes are now available
The bakery I went to is Polish and so I’m sure this must be a part of their heritage too. The shape of the cake was originally meant to represent the baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes
ATTIRE FOR TODAY
I’ll be wearing this nice warm sweater today as it is much colder here with a chance of snow. We have snow in the forecast for most of the week it seems. It looks like going back to work tomorrow we’ll have 50 % chance of that white stuff.
It will be a cold week too as we probably won’t go above freezing at all.

AROUND HOME
I still have 2 of these sweet delights in the cupboard. One is a cheese Danish and the other is what they call a Bear Claw. It’s filled with nuts.
I’ll probably have one for breakfast today and save the other for tomorrow.
FAMILY ALBUM
The Turnover is truly a part of the Christmas tradition in my family. I shared the recipe with you all awhile back in my newsletter. I really had hoped to do some baking, but after visiting the bakery felt that I did not need any more sweet things around my house so I didn’t bake at all.
But my youngest Sister did and she shared a few with me too.
