Life is a Special Occasion!

Oktoberfest begins today. Oktoberfest is a two week festival, held in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. While it is a giant world festival in Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations are held around the world during this time. So, if you can't get to the fair in Germany, you can participate in a local event. Events include lots of food, music, dancing, rides, and carnival booths. These festivals also celebrate the rich heritage of the German people.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Homecoming means tradition.
Author Unknown
There is a tiny bit of German in my ancestry and so celebrating this time of year is in my blood so to speak. I love going to local festivals and eating traditional foods. I love bratwurst and sauerkraut, so I looked on line to see what Octoberfest festivals might be going on in our area and found that one of the nearby cities already had their celebration on Labor Day weekend. I found one later on in the month for central Ohio and another for Southern Ohio, but none nearby. Guess I’ll be celebrating this one here at home. I know there is some sauerkraut in the pantry,
They say that today is also Ancestor Day. That is very appropriate as we celebrate a German tradition today. Many of us are completely unaware of our ancestors and the lives they lived, yet they almost certainly went a long way towards shaping our habits, traditions and values today.
I have a nice mixture in my family tree and lots of good eating is always on the menu here. So many traditions start and end with food.
I hope you all have a TERRIFIC Tuesday!
WHAT’S NEW IN THE KITCHEN
There is a food holiday to celebrate every day of the year!
National Corned Beef Hash Day
Hash is a culinary term for a mixture of foods that have been finely chopped or diced. One popular variety is that traditional American comfort food, corned beef hash. It’s origins trace back to England, Scotland and other parts of Europe, the version that we claim here in the States has become just as American as apple pie.
Easy Corned Beef Hash
1 teaspoon cooking oil, as needed
2 tablespoons onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup cooked corned beef, finely chopped
1 small baked potato, cooled and diced
1 pinch thyme, to taste
salt, to taste
black pepper, to taste
Sauté onion in oil until translucent. Do not brown. Add remaining ingredients, stir to mix well and cook over low heat 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Serve immediately while still hot.
VARIATION: Use leftover roast beef rather than corned beef. Vary seasonings to taste.
COUNTING MY GIFTS
Life is a happy thing, a festival to be enjoyed rather than a drudgery to be endured.

Counting at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for. There is truly is always something to be thankful for.
4261. for festivals, always a cause for celebration
4262. for traditional foods
4263. for our ancestors, good to remember where your roots are
Enter into His courts with thanksgiving — and in His presence is fullness of Joy!
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Almighty and eternal God,
Protect our military
as they discharge their duties
with the shield of your strength,
may the power of your love
enable them to return home in safety
that with all who love them
they may ever praise you for your loving care.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT’s
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
ADVICE FOR TODAY

A bit of love from someone dear…

Cute pumpkin figurines. I never made corned beef hash, but I do like that recipe. I will have to check if there are any Oktoberfest celebrations here.

Thank you for visiting my blog--I'm glad you liked my poem! I only remember visiting an October Fest once--I was in Cincinnati for a conference and there were booths of all kinds outside the hotel. I took a quick walk around but didn't have time to actually try any of the food. I'm of Irish descent so I haven't really had much in the way of German food. However, my mom used to make ham and cabbage which I loved--but I think that is probably more Irish than German. Our foundress was German. Maybe we should have an October Fest here at the motherhouse!
Wouldn't it be awesome to visit Otcoberfest in Germany! We have a Fall Frolic coming this weekend but I don't think it will be anything like an Octoberfest! I haven't had Corned Beef Hash for a good long time. I don't think I have ever cooked it myself. We do love Corned beef at my house. But there is never any leftover for a hash!!
