Life is a Special Occasion!

Today is Neither Rain Nor Snow Day which celebrates the opening of the New York Post Office building on this day in 1914.
This following inscription was inscribed on the building:
Neither snow nor rain not heat nor gloom of night, stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.
Use Neither Rain Nor Snow Day to show your appreciation to your postal delivery people, especially those who walk their routes.
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
A strange volume of real life in the daily packet of the postman. Eternal love and instant payment!
Douglas Jerrold
In my neighborhood we have a mail carrier that walks the route delivering mail to each house. I can’t remember a time that the mail didn’t come. They’ve faithfully walked the route each day no matter what the weather and I’m very thankful for them.
This week we’ve returned to hot weather, some days around 90, but they are saying that the next few days we’ll be having some rain here. It is badly needed. You’ll see in today’s picture that the back yard is drying out and we have only patches of green now. Our fence line has a row of Rose of Sharon bushes that we try to keep cut like a hedge. Thanks to DS#6 they were all neatly trimmed on Labor Day. DS#5 also helped and got the yard trimmed and mowed. I was very appreciative of their help.
I hope you all have a WONDERFUL Wednesday !
WHAT’S NEW IN THE KITCHEN
There is a food holiday to celebrate every day of the year!
It’s National Salami Day which is a good day, indeed! We don't need an excuse to bite into this spicy sausage. But, seeing that it is being honored today, let's make sure to have ample amounts of salami for lunch, dinner and snacks. One of my favorites for hot days is pasta salad, I can make a meal of it. So in honor of the day I found this recipe for a pasta salad that includes salami to share with you all today.
Salami Pasta Salad
2 cups uncooked small pasta shells
3/4 cup chopped green pepper
3/4 cup chopped fresh tomatoes
1/2 cup chopped pepperoni
1/2 cup cubed hard salami
1/2 cup whole ripe olives, quartered
2 ounces provolone cheese, cubed
1/3 cup chopped onion
for the dressing:
1/3 cup canola oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Cook pasta according to package directions; drain and rinse in cold water. Place in a large bowl; add the green pepper, tomatoes, pepperoni, salami, olives, cheese and onion.
In a small bowl, whisk the dressing ingredients. Pour over pasta mixture; toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate until serving.
Yield: 9 servings.
COUNTING MY GIFTS
The post office has a great charm at one point of our lives. When you have lived to my age, you will begin to think letters are never worth going through the rain for.
Jane Austen
Counting at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for. There is truly is always something to be thankful for.

ADVICE FOR TODAY
And none will hear the postman's knock
Without a quickening of the heart.
For who can bear to feel himself forgotten?

A bit of love from someone dear…

You share great recipes here, Ma, and that pasta salad looks like another good one. Glad your sons were able to help with getting your yard a bit under control. I do admire the mail carriers. Here they drive from house to house but they have to get out and put the mail in the mailbox, even on those extremely warm days.

When I was growing up we had a postman that walked his post. He brought me my engagement ring in the mail. I opened it and showed him the next day and popped down on one knee and put it on my finger. So sweet. I was living at home with my mom while pregnant with my oldest. Husband was on board ship in the Indian Ocean. I had my suitcase for the hospital packed and parked under the baby crib in the living room. On the day I went to the hospital (since we weren't on the porch) the postman looked into the window, saw the suitcase was gone, and announced all up and down the street that I had gone to have the baby!!! Good man. Thanks for giving these memories today Ma!
