Life is a Special Occasion!
Hallmark
Today is Octoberfest Day. Oktoberfest is a two week festival, held in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. While it is a giant world festival in Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations are held around the world during this time. So, if you can't get to the fair in Germany, you can participate in a local event.
It's time to eat, drink, and be merry! It is a huge festival with lots of food, music, dancing, rides, and carnival booths. Each year millions of people from all over the world come to the fair. Oktoberfest celebrations and festivals are held around the world during this time. These festivals also celebrate the rich heritage of the German people.
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
Proverbs 25:11
Here in our little town we are celebrating our annual Apple Festival this weekend instead of an Octoberfest, but the idea is still the same. Lots of good food will be enjoyed and there will be some music and lots of booths of all kinds there too.
German food often includes apples and so I thought I’d share a recipe or two with you today.
Braised Sauerkraut with Apples and Onions
2 tablespoons butter or vegetable oil
1 large onion, coarsely chopped
2 pounds bagged sauerkraut, rinsed and drained
1 Granny Smith apple, cored and coarsely chopped
3 tablespoons dark brown sugar
*1/2 cup dry vermouth
1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
*1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
1 teaspoon dried marjoram leaves
*4 juniper berries, slightly crushed
I didn’t used the *items, I considered them optional, but perhaps not authentic
Heat a medium stock pot or Dutch oven over medium high heat. Add the butter, than the onions and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients. Stir well to combine. Bring to a boil over high heat, then cover and reduce to medium-low. Cook at a simmer until very tender, about 90 minutes. Remove lid and bring back to a boil. Cook until most of the liquid has evaporated, about 5 minutes. Serve immediately or let set, uncovered, over warm burner until needed.
The recipe below is a simple and delicious dessert for a busy weeknight or a special occasion. See the instructions for suggested amounts of ingredients per apple, then use more or less to suit your tastes.
Baked Apples with Brown Sugar Topping
Large, tart baking apples, preferably red skinned for color
Butter, room temperature
Granulated sugar
Ground cinnamon
1 cup water
Dark or light brown sugar
Preheat oven to 400° F. Rinse the apples. Remove cores. Peel off one strip of skin around the top of each. Fill the center of each apple with 1/2 teaspoon butter. Mix together 1 teaspoon sugar and 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon and sprinkle over the butter. Place the apples in a shallow broiler proof baking dish. Pour water over the apples. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until apples are tender and nicely glazed, basting frequently with the pan juices. Remove the baking dish from the oven. Pat a mixture of about 2 teaspoons butter and 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar on the top of each apple. Place under the broiler until the mixture bubbles. Let cool slightly. Serve warm as is or, if desired, with vanilla ice cream, milk or cream.
The weather here is turning cooler and it will probably be a good day for me to heat up a cup of hot apple cider to sip on. We may also be in for some rain, but hopefully not on the folks at the Apple Festival.
I hope you all have a SUPER Saturday!

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Almighty and eternal God,
Protect our military
as they discharge their duties
with the shield of your strength,
may the power of your love
enable them to return home in safety
that with all who love them
they may ever praise you for your loving care.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT’s
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
GOD BLESS YOU ALL !

I saw an advertisement for our city's Octoberfest, but didn't catch the date for it. Always fun with apple festivals; fall is definitely in the air here with cool mornings :)
betty
Despite my German heritage, I've never attended an Oktoberfest! DH and I were just talking last week about finding one and attending. That sauerkraut recipe sounds really good.
Hope your apple festival is great fun!
Still in the low 100's, high 90's here... won't feel like fall until November...
Love your fall porch decorations... :)
