Life is a Special Occasion!

February 12th is Abraham Lincoln's actual birth date. However, in modern times, we celebrate Lincoln, and all of the U.S. Presidents, on President's Day.
President Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. Honest Abe, as he was commonly known, was born in the wilderness country of Hardin County, Kentucky on February 12, 1809.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
A faith like Lincoln's would transform the world!
James Oppenheim
Although they do lump our Presidents all together in one holiday anymore, I really think they each deserve some individual recognition. I’ve been watching a series about John Adams, our 2nd President and have been made very much aware of the struggles they go through for our country.
Every year on Presidents Day weekend I go with DD to the Outlet Mall shopping and this weekend we’ll be going on Sunday, the 15th. This is normally my weekend to do the 3rd Sunday dinner for my family, but since it’s our only chance to go shopping, I’ll won’t be fixing dinner. I’ll be shopping instead. This weekend’s sales are worth going for. I am planning to make some brownies and cupcakes to share for Valentines Day so I’m hoping I don’t have to eat them all on my own.
One of my favorite brownie recipes is Mexican Sheet Cake Brownies. It makes a big batch so I don’t make it often. But I'll share the recipe today.
2 c. flour
2 c. sugar
1 stick butter
1/2 c. shortening
4 tbsp. cocoa
1 c. water
1 tsp. soda
1/2 c. buttermilk
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
FROSTING:
1 stick butter
4 tbsp. cocoa
5 tbsp. milk
1 box powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. nuts, chopped, optional
Sift together in large bowl the flour and sugar. In saucepan, bring to a rapid boil 1 stick butter, shortening, cocoa and water. Pour over flour mixture; blend well. Add soda, buttermilk, salt, cinnamon, vanilla and eggs. Mix well and pour into lightly greased and floured 10 1/2" x 15 1/2" sheet cake pan. Bake 20 to 25 minutes in 400 degree oven.
FROSTING: Bring to a boil butter, cocoa and milk. Remove from heat and add powdered sugar, vanilla and nuts; mix well. For best results, frost cake while still quite warm.
It’s delicious and feeds a crowd. For Valentines Day I won’t use the nuts but will sprinkle on some colorful hearts.
PLEASE NOTE: If you don’t have buttermilk on hand you can make this simple substitute: Place a Tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice in a cup. Add enough milk to bring the liquid up to the one cup line. Let stand for five minutes. Then, use as much as your recipe calls for.
The pictures today are of the view outside my back door on one of the rare sunny days that we have during winter.
I hope you all have a great day! Happy Thursday !
COUNTING MY GIFTS
Abraham Lincoln - the spirit incarnate of those who won victory in the Civil War - was the true representative of this people, not only for his own generation, but for all time, because he was a man among men.
Theodore Roosevelt
Counting at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for. Sometimes it seems as if I’m repeating a lot of things that I’m thankful for, but no moment is really ever the same and every day is a new beginning. There is always, always something to be thankful for.
2486. for brave men like President Lincoln
2487. for a day to spend with my daughter
2488. for yet another reason to turn the oven on and warm up my cozy kitchen
Enter into His courts with thanksgiving — and in His presence is fullness of Joy!
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Lord, hold our troops in
your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us
in our time of need. I ask this in the
name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT's
GOD BLESS YOU ALL !
ADVICE FOR TODAY
Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.
Abraham Lincoln
A little smile, a word of cheer,
A bit of love from someone dear…
Love,

Those brownies sound delicious. Seems that presidents day is early this year but always great sales for it. Enjoy your shopping trip.

I will have to try this recipe it looks so delicious. Thanks for your nice comment on my blog I like to hear from all my blogger friends, as for me I read them mostly when I am on my Nook HD and it is almost imposable to type on it. Your snow looks so pretty. Be careful while shoveling snow and don't fall.
BRRRR out your back door... and I am going to have to write the recipe down! Have fun shopping!
