Life is a Special Occasion!
Hallmark
St. Nicholas Day is today. Yes, there really was a Saint Nicholas. He lived in the country of Greece, just a couple hundred years after the birth of Christ. This day is in honor of Saint Nicholas and his life. He was well known for giving to needy people, especially children. There are many stories and tales of him helping out children in need.
The practice of hanging up stockings originated with Saint Nicholas. As the ancient legend goes, Saint Nicholas was known to throw small bags of gold coins into the open windows of poor homes. After one bag of gold fell into the stocking of a child, news got around. Children soon began hanging their stocking by their chimneys 'in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there’.
Have a happy St. Nicholas Day!
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Jolly Old Saint Nicholas, lend your ear this way,
Don't you tell a single soul, what I'm going to say
Christmas Eve is coming soon, now you dear old man
Whisper what you'll bring to me, tell me if you can-
When the clock is striking twelve, when I'm fast asleep,
Down the chimney broad and black, with your pack you'll creep
All the stockings you will find, hanging in a row
Mine will be the shortest one, you'll be sure to know-
Johnny wants a pair of skates, Suzy wants a sled,
Nellie wants a story book, yellow, blue and red,
Now I think I leave to you, what to give the rest,
Choose for me dear Santa Claus, you know what's the best!
Traditional
I have always love this Christmas song. It’s a favorite of mine. St. Nick’s Day became a tradition with us when my children were small. They’d set their shoes out by the fireplace in hopes that St. Nicholas would soon be there. It was just a little treat to make the anticipation of Christmas easier.
Nicholas is a good Advent saint for more important reasons than the date of his special day. Whatever he did, and it is said that he did many kinds of amazing things, may not be as important as the way he did it. Nicholas became so popular because he was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. His life clearly reflected the way each one of us is called to show
God's love to others, especially those in need.
Saint Nicholas helps us remember Christmas is a celebration of love, hope, kindness and generosity
They say today will be another mild day so I’m thinking that this afternoon, I’ll probably put the Christmas roping and wreaths on the front porch before the weather turns bad. The inside decorating is mostly done but there are still two missing crates. I can’t find my Christmas plates!
The pictures were all taken on a visit to a Christmas shop where they have the best displays of Christmas decorations I’ve found so far.
I hope you all have a RELAXING and restful day !
COUNTING MY GIFTS
To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.
Show me your paths
and teach me to follow;
guide me by your truth
and instruct me.
Psalm 25
Counting at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for. There is truly is always something to be thankful for.
3376. for kind and generous people that provide a good example
3377. for the mild December weather we’ve had so far
3378. for Christmas songs, so full of cheer!
Enter into His courts with thanksgiving — and in His presence is fullness of Joy!
18 Days Until Christmas
Advent tip for today: Make edible Christmas trees out of upside down ice cream cones, green frosting, and sprinkles.
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Almighty and eternal God,
Protect our military
as they discharge their duties
with the shield of your strength,
may the power of your love
enable them to return home in safety
that with all who love them
they may ever praise you for your loving care.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT’s
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
ADVICE FOR TODAY
The giver of every good and perfect gift has called upon us to mimic
His giving, by grace, through faith, and this is not of ourselves.
St. Nicholas of Myra
A little smile, a word of cheer,
A bit of love from someone dear…
Love,
ma

I enjoyed reading this entry about St. Nicholas!! Thank you for sharing!! I hope you have a BLESSED day!!!
Oh oh! I hope you do find the missing crates and your plates. Sounds like a good idea to get your outside decorating done while the weather is pleasant. That is what we used to do in Montana; we would look at a weekend even in November that was pleasant and at least put up the lights when it wasn't freezing, but wouldn't light them until after Thanksgiving.
We did always put out a stocking for St. Nicholas and he usually did fill it with nuts and candies when I was growing up.
betty
Happy St. Nicholas Day to you too!
I love your posts with the perfect quotes to go with them. xx
I'm embarrassed to admit I've not heard of St. Nicholas before. Already, I like him better than Santa Claus!
I hope you find your missing plates too Pam! Will look forward to seeing your Christmas Decorations. I loved reading about St Nicholas. I had heard of him of course, but I learned something new from your post, which explains so much. Now I know why we hang up stockings and the mystery behind those net sacs of gold foil covered coins we see in the shops this time of year! Thanks for all that you share! I hope you have a lovely week! xoxo
