ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
JANUARY 5TH, 2010
It's TUESDAY…
We have lots of snow and freezing cold weather here. The snow is supposed to keep up just about all week. We may see a few breaks but pretty much the word is
SNOW
The roads were terrible coming and going to work. I really took it slow and did just fine. I hope you all are doing the same.
Yesterday was pretty good other than the snow so I’m hoping today will be the same. I’m to go for my hair cut after work and if the roads are ok I’ll make it.
Take good care all!
THINKING
On the 12th day of Christmas my true love gave to me...
12 Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle's Creed
The Magi display significant qualities for any of us to emulate, especially in the development of skills and gifts:
1) keen observation
2) ability to follow directions
3) quality of presence
4) active participation
5) discernment
May these wise men continue to inspire our journeys so the groundwork of their story of loving search can be claimed for generations to come
NEW IN THE KITCHEN
On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me . . .
The king cake takes its name from the Biblical kings.
Tradition states that their journey to Bethlehem took twelve days
The season for king cake extends from the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas (Twelfth Night and Epiphany Day), through to Mardi Gras day
A King Cake
King Cakes are round or oval cakes with a surprise trinket baked inside. Whoever gets the special piece of cake wears a paper crown and is declared king or queen of the part
A sweet bread shaped like a crown and topped with dried fruit.
To make these super easy King Cakes you will need:
Greased 8 or 9 inch round cake pan
One package of canned cinnamon rolls (8 rolls) with icing.
Green decorating sprinkles/sugar crystals
Purple decorating sprinkles/sugar crystals
Gold/Yellow decorating sprinkles/sugar crystals
Optional icing:
Powdered Sugar
Water
Open canned cinnamon rolls and separate into individual rolls.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Take one individual roll and unroll it in to full length
Fold in half.
Twist (or braid) rope
Form roll into a small circle pinching ends to close
Place cakes into 375 degree oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown
While cakes are in oven. You can prepare the icing and decoration
To prepare homemade icing: Place powdered sugar (approx 1-2 cups) into a small mixing bowl. Slowly mix in warm water until the icing is the desired consistency
Remove mini king cakes from oven. They should be nice and golden brown right now. I like to make sure mine are a little more "done" than cinnamon rolls would be
Before the mini king cakes begin to cool, spoon a generous amount of icing onto each cake
Add a few strands of Mardi Gras beads and a Mardi Gras Mask and you are ready to Laissez les Bon Ton Roulet (Let the Good Times Roll!)!
If you want to make the process super easy, you can use the icing that comes with the cinnamon rolls, but I prefer to make my own so that I will have plenty of icing for each cake
Or you can use this easy recipe
Purchase frozen puff pastry and roll it out into two large circles about the size of a cake pan. Place one circle of puff pastry on a cookie sheet, spread it with almond paste, hide the surprise, and then top it with the other circle of puff pastry. Brush the top with beaten egg yolk and bake according to the puff pastry directions.
Place a paper crown on top of the cake and serve.
PRAYERS
Lord, I give thanks for the gold in my life: for the people who are precious to me, for the happy memories I treasure, and for all that has been good over the years.
Amen
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Lord, hold our troops in
your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us
in our time of need. I ask this in the
name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
GOD BLESS YOU!
AROUND HOME
I’m still enjoying leftovers here at my house. Pretty soon they’ll all be gone and then I will have to cook something again but not for so many people for sure.
I did hear from DS#4 on Sunday evening. They made it home from their vacation safe and sound. He felt like he needed a vacation from the vacation but had to go back to work on Monday too. It was very cold at their house too, but no snow.
FAMILY ALBUM
This is DS#6’s dog giving DS#5 a big lick on the face New Year’s day.
COUNTING THE DAYS
We wish you a Merry Christmas!
And a Happy New Year!
There are two seasonal diversions that can ease the bite of any winter.
One is the January thaw. The other is the seed catalogues.
