ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
FOR FRIDAY, MAY 1ST, 2020
The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Today is May Day which has been celebrated for hundreds of years, but for two very different reasons. Our modern day observances have both green roots and red roots. For some people May Day is a celebration of Spring - - a tradition that comes from the Pagen festival of Beltane. These are the green traditions. For others May Day is a celebration of workers rights, marked by rallies, parades and marches. In 1958, President Eisenhower declared that the 2nd type of May Day celebrations were communist ,thence the name of red roots, and created a new holiday called Law Day to take its place.
One of the most popular May Day traditions is the maypole dance, which was created by the ancient druids of the British Isles. During the Beltane festival people preformed a circle dance around a pole. The dance evolved over the years to include the ribbons and standard weaving patters we still use today.
To celebrate today we could drop off a bouquet of May Day flowers to a loved one.
If you can’t see the bright side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
The world’s favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.
Edwin Way Teale
When I was a child in school, we always had a May pole and went around it weaving the colored ribbons into a beautiful sight. We also made May baskets filled with flowers to take home to our parents too. Sometimes the baskets and flowers were made with paper and sometimes we lucky enough to have some real ones to share. Often the baskets were hung on a door knob of a friend or neighbor.
I’m not so sure what is still done today. But hopefully some of my grandchildren will get out the paper. scissors and glue and make some May Day baskets of their own.
I’m all about celebrating Spring and the pictures today are of DD and her family helping me cleaning up my yard the other day. It’s one thing I have to do before down mowing season begins. This old oak tree of mine sheds a lot of sticks and branches over the winter and leaves a mess to clean up in the Spring. This is the first time I’ve had help cleaning up and usually do it myself, but it is back breaking work for me. but they did it so quickly, I couldn’t believe how fast it all got done. They sat about 7 bags of debri out on the curb lawn when they were done, plus a pile of larger branches that couldn’t be bagged. Our community then picks them up from the curb and disposes of it all. It felt great to spend an afternoon outside and to have a little company too. I’m so glad we finally have some Spring weather to enjoy!
I hope you have a FANTASTIC Friday!

Enter into His courts with thanksgiving — and in His presence is fullness of Joy!
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Almighty and eternal God,
Protect our military
as they discharge their duties
with the shield of your strength,
may the power of your love
enable them to return home in safety
that with all who love them
they may ever praise you for your loving care.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT’s
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
ADVICE FOR TODAY
Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to the body and soul.
John Muir
A little smile, a word of cheer,
A bit of love from someone dear…

May is the month of merriment!
Looking back, although at home a lot, April went by so fast. I can't believe it is May 1st already! You had amazing helpers to get the work done so fast!! I bet they enjoyed being outside and being of help to you too! Hopefully soon you can get together with them for a meal inside of your home or theirs!

Boy, May sure is the "month of" a lot of stuff! It's rather appropriate that one of those things is in recognition of home schooling. A whole lot more people have been forced into that role by the pandemic, and I don't think they'll ever take schoolteacher for granted again!
It's nice that you had help with the yardwork this year. When you remarked about how quickly they got the job done, it reminded me of something that happened years ago, when our sons were tasked with raking the yard. They piddled around one full day, and had little progress to show for their efforts. Next day, after breakfast, my husband told them they weren't going to eat again until the job was done. This worried mother fretted about the declaration, but not for long. The boys were finished long before lunchtime. :) I guess all they needed was a little incentive...
Take care, dear lady. Have a super weekend.
Great memories, Ma. I, too, 'danced' around our grade school's May pole. My father always produced big squares of construction paper and helped me fashion cones to hold wildflowers. I'd leave them on our neighbors' doorsteps, ring the doorbell and scamper away like the devil himself was chasing me. :)
