ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Life is a Special Occasion!

Today is Use Your Common Sense Day which is celebrated on the birthday of the great American humorist, actor, and cowboy Will Rogers who was born on this day in 1879. Will coined the phrase, common sense ain’t that common.
Merriam Webster defines common sense as the ability to think and behave in a reasonable way and to make good decisions. Common sense should be used by everyone every day in all aspects of life including finances, career, relationships, health, and politics. People with common sense are seen as reasonable, down to earth, reliable, and practical.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.
Gertrude Stein
Not all the things we read in the papers or see on TV are true and common sense is often needed in order to know what is true or not true. I can remember a time when one of my boys proudly announced
that if I used a certain detergent my clothes would be whiter and cleaner. He had been watching a TV commercial and thought he’d found a solution to my laundry problems. I told him, you can not believe everything you see. I’d already tried that detergent and found it to be no better than any other. Experience is often the best teacher and that is where common sense come into play.
We know by trial and error that our coffee is hot when it first comes out of the pot so we wait till it cools bit before taking that first sip. You know if it’s cold out, you’d better wear a jacket to keep warm. But there are those that believe what others say and don’t use their own common sense. Common sense will tell you that there is more to life than meets the eye.
Today is the last day of Daylight Savings time and knowing that I’ll be loosing an hour of sleep, common sense tells me I’d be better off if I went to bed an hour earlier than usual tonight. If I lose that hour sleep I always feel like I never catch up until the Spring when I get it back. One way or the other don’t forget to fall back one hour and set your clocks accordingly. Daylight savings time ends tomorrow.
I hope you all have a SUPER Saturday!
WHAT’S NEW IN THE KITCHEN
There is a food holiday to celebrate every day of the year!
It’s National Candy Day! We have been eating candies and sweet confections for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians preserved nuts and fruits in honey, and the Aztecs and Mayans consumed chocolate during religious rituals as early as 300 AD.
Today, there are thousands of different types of candy, all with their own unique history. For example, Tootsie Rolls were created by Leo Hirshfield of New York in 1896. He named them after his daughter, who was nicknamed Tootsie.
The average American eats twenty five pounds of candy each year. That may seem like a lot, but the average person in Denmark eats thirty six pounds each year!
I always have some candy on hand here at my house and one of my favorites is Turtle Candy. It has layers of chocolate, pecans and caramel. I always buy it but it is easy enough to make, so that is what today’s recipe is for.
Christmas Turtle Candy
4 oz. pecan halves
24 individual caramel pieces
1 tsp. shortening
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Cover baking sheet with foil, shinny side exposed. Lightly grease foil with vegetable oil spray.
Place 3 pecan saves in a Y shape on the foil. Place 1 caramel candy in cent of each Y. Bake just until caramel is melted, about 10 minutes.
Heat the shortening and chocolate chips over low heat until chocolate is melted. Spread chocolate over candies and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

ADVICE FOR TODAY
Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge
A little smile, a word of cheer,
A bit of love from someone dear…

That Christmas turtle candy looks delicious! So true about common sense is often gained by experiencing things. We learn not to do something again that causes us discomfort, etc. Since we don't change the clocks here in Arizona, its a "normal" evening for us :)

Happy Saturday to you! No candy for me lately but I refrigerated some fudge we bought at an Amish shop so I’m hoping Louis Dean doesn’t eat it all before I get some!
