ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Happy as a duck on water
Old Proverb
Donald Duck is one of my favorites. Thanks to my grand babes I’ve watched his cartoons more as an adult than I probably did as a child. Ducks are comical creatures to watch and we have a lot of them here where I live. There is a lake nearby and I love to go over there and watch them. They can also teach us a lot about life. The following story gave me a lot of insight so I thought I share it with all of you too.
The Wisdom of Flying Geese
In the Spring, when you see geese heading North for the Summer or South in the Fall, flying along in V formation, you might be interested in knowing what scientists have discovered about why they fly that way. It has been learned that as each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in V formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.
People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front.
If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are heading in the same direction as we are. When the lead goose gets tired, he rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point.
It pays to take turns doing hard jobs, with people or with flying geese. These geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. We need to be careful what we say when we honk from behind.
When a goose gets sick, or is wounded by gunshot, and falls out, two geese fall out of formation and follow him down to help and protect him. They stay with him until he is either able to fly or until he is dead, and then they launch out on their own or with another formation until they catch up with their group.
If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other, protect one another and sometimes make new friends who seem to be going in our direction.

They are saying we have a chance of some rain today but we’ll also be a lot warmer. It may be time to check and make sure the air conditioner works as the long range forecast says we’ll be hotter than we’ve been a quite awhile.
The pictures today are of the lake and some of the ducks and geese here in the community where I live. As luck would have it, none of them were in the water when I took the pictures. They were all snoozing in the shade.
I hope you all have a FANTASTIC Friday!
WHAT’S NEW IN THE KITCHEN
There is a food holiday to celebrate every day of the year!
It's National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day, and time to enjoy a slice of a pie you many never have tried before. While Strawberry Rhubarb Pie has a long history, dating back to the 1800's, not too many people have ever tried it. Some people, especially the younger crowd, do not even know what rhubarb is.
The rhubarb plant has a long, thick, edible stem with good flavor, but a tart taste. Rhubarb recipes use sugar to sweeten it. The leaves are not eaten, as they are poisonous. Through the years, debate has raged as to whether Rhubarb is a vegetable, or a fruit. It is commonly thought of as a fruit, as this is the way it is used. In actuality, Rhubarb is actually a vegetable.
Strawberry Rhubarb Pie
2 cups rhubarb, washed and sliced
2 cups fresh strawberries, washed and halved
1 1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup minute tapioca
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
1 package ready to use pie crusts
boiling water
1 Tablespoon butter or margarine
In a mixing bowl, combine rhubarb, strawberries, sugar, tapioca, vanilla extract, and lemon zest.
Let fruit filling set for 15 minutes.
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Line a 9 inch pie plate with one crust, as directed on the package.
Fill crust with fruit filling.
Dot with butter or margarine. Cover pie with the second crust. Seal and flute the edges of the pie. Cut four or five slits in the crust, to allow steam to escape.
Bake 45 minutes. Allow to cool before serving.

ADVICE FOR TODAY
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface, but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Such a pretty lake close by! I too like to watch ducks. They are so cute when they waddle.

That was very informative about the geese. I did not know that about them flying in the V formation. Makes perfect sense. And I now know where that saying about having the sense of a goose comes from. Have a nice weekend Ma!
I love that parable about the geese!
LOL-ing about Donald Duck day! Last year I spotted an olden scotch-plaid cooler in an antique shop and HAD to bring it home. See, my strongest memories of Donald Duck are the little cans of DD orange juice my mother kept in that cooler on road trips and made me drink. Still don't like o.j., but love those downy ducks! :)
