If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
Henry Howe, one the the state's greatest historians, died at the age of 77 in Columbus, Ohio, on this date in 1893. He visited all the counties in Ohio and interview pioneers then wrote a book called the Historical Collections of Ohio. In 1856, Howe began traveling though out the United States working on a book called Our Whole Country. He moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1878 and began to revise Historical Collections of Ohio. At age 70, he traced the state of Ohio again updating information on all 88 counties.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
To be seventy years young is sometimes far more cheerful and hopeful than to be forty years old.
Oliver Wendell Holmes
As I am now approaching my 70th year I can relate to how much work it must have been for Howe to visit all those 88 counties of Ohio and revise his book. I've been working at visiting all the counties but am not writing a book about them. I don't think I've managed to see even half of them.
I do think we keep young at heart though by doing something we love to do. Having something to do that we love, make life more worthwhile. No matter what age you are if you are able to have something worth living for it makes a huge difference.
I'm not an historian but I do love history. I enjoy visiting historical places and reading about people that lived in the past. Lots of historical things have happened just in my life time. I can only imagine what a history of the United State would look like now. They say that Howe took 5 years to complete 2 volumes of Our Whole Country.
The pictures today are of last year's fun in the leaves with DD and our little Xfactor. Hopefully I'll get some more to share with you this year. He wasn't walking yet then, so this year will be quite different for sure.
These cooler days are good days to enjoy hot chocolate and I went on a search to find ways to spice up all those packets of instant hot chocolate that have accumulated on my shelf. I found several good ideas so thought I share them with you all today.
Caramel: A tablespoon of caramel sauce can do wonders for hot chocolate. Spoon in your favorite brand and give it a good stir right before you take your first sip.
Ice cream: It may sound weird to put something cold in your hot cocoa, but a scoop of ice cream makes it really creamy and thick. Make sure your hot chocolate is as hot as you can get it without allowing it to boil, and pop in a scoop of your favorite ice cream.
Cinnamon, Nutmeg or Vanilla extract: A 1/4 teaspoon of any of these always adds zip.
Peppermint Stick: Drop a peppermint stick or even one of those peppermint candies you picked up at your last restaurant visit. It adds great flavor, and a great smell. This version is nice if you’ve got a cold.
Hot Cherries: Nearly everyone has that jar of maraschino cherries sitting in the fridge, so drop two or three teaspoons of the juice into your drink, along with a cherry. Tastes like drinking a chocolate cordial.
Last but not least, I love to put marshmallows in my hot chocolate too and since peeps marshmallow treats now come in seasonal varieties this might be the perfect time to add a ghostly peep or two.
Reminder: Today is Columbus Day and government offices, banks and post offices will be closed.
I hope you all have a great start to this new week and have a Happy Monday!
We turn not older with years, but newer every day.

COUNTING MY GIFTS
There is always a lot to be thankful for, if you take the time to look. For example, I'm sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

I have counted at least 3 things I'm thankful for this past year and have now reached my 1000 gifts. I'm not stopping, but will continue on counting. There is always, always something to be thankful for.
1037. for having things I love to do
1038. for historians that have recorded the past for others to learn from
1039. for nice days to be able to get outside and get the yard work done

You're blessed when you're content with just who you are—no more, no less. That's the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can't be bought

That was a lovely Dickinson quote, and the pictures were all lovely, too!
Great pictures of last year with XFactor, Ma. I'm sure he'll enjoy crunching through the leaves this year! Loved all the suggestions for what to put in hot cocoa, never thought of putting ice cream in it, but that does sound delicious!
I wonder if the books of Howe are available to read; they would be fascinating I bet!

I've put the caramel, ice cream and of course marshmallows... I also add flavored coffee creamer and flavored coffee... and don't forget whip cream... we are big hot chocolate drinkers here... :)
