ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 23RD, 2020
The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Today is National Picnic Day which celebrates the eating of meals outside in the beauty of nature. Our modern day idea of a picnic evolved from Medieval hunting feasts and Victorian garden parties. These were usually quite sophisticated affairs, which involved multiple and elaborate preparations.
During the early 19th century a group of wealthy London citizens founded the Picnic Society to promote picnics as social gatherings. These picnics were potlucks, and each participant had to provide a share of the entertainment. The society members drank from crystal goblets and listened to a five string quartets while eating their meal. Today picnics are usually casual meals enjoyed on a a comfortable picnic blanket.
To celebrate National Pinic Day, take your meal outdoors and enjoy a picnic!

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
There are few things so pleasant as a picnic eaten in perfect comfort.
W. Somerset Maugham
One year I decided to paint the lids of old antique picnic baskets for the each of my children and that is what the pictures are of today. I’d collected them over a period of several years until I had enough for each one of them. Some I found at gift stores, others at antique markets and some at estate sales.
I googled picnic foods to find today’s recipe. It seems that fried chicken, apple pie and lemonade or iced tea are the staples of picnic meals across the country.
Picnic Fried Chicken
1 broiler/fryer chicken, 3 lbs, cut up
3/4 c. buttermilk
Coating:
1 1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1 tbsp. paprika
1/4 tsp sage
1/4 tsp thyme
1/8 tsp baking powder
Oil for frying
Pat chicken pieces with paper towels, place in large flat dish. Pour buttermilk over chicken, and allow to soak at least 1 hour or overnight in refrigerator.
Combine coating ingredients in large shallow dish. Add chicken pieces, one at a time and turn to coat well. Lay coated pieces on waxed paper for 15 minutes to allow coating to dry so it will cling better in frying.
In a deep skillet, heat 1/2 inch oil over medium heat to 350 degrees. Fry chicken uncovered until coating is dark golden brown and meat is no longer pink, turing occasionally . 7 to 8 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.Chicken will be fork tender. I like to put the cover on the pan after browning the chicken and let it steam on low for awhile, about 15 minutes, to assure it is cooked through.
I hope you have a GREAT day. Happy Thursday!

ADVICE FOR TODAY
If you’re going to enjoy the picnic that life really is, you’d better learn to like yourself not despite your flaws and so called deficits but because of them.

It's in the 50's here today with some rain predicted so my picnic will probably be on the sunporch.
What a clever idea with your painting of the picnic baskets lids. I bet your children loved them! We might take our lunch and eat it in the backyard today. That would be fun.

It's been years and years since we went on a picnic! As I recall, the last time we were over-run by ants and flies. I love those picnic baskets lids SO much. That's a terrific gift idea, and I'm itching to start back to thrift shops and estate sales.
Say, I've never tried my hand at painting something like that. Are all yours drawn free-hand? Would you consider sharing a tutorial on one of your posts someday?
