ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
FOR SUNDAY, APRIL 19TH, 2020
The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Today is National Garlic Day which celebrates the vegetable called the stinking rose and promotes the many uses of garlic. Garlic is widely used around the world for its pungent flavor as a seasoning and a condiment. Garlic cloves are used for consumption raw and cooked or for medicinal purposes. They have a characteristic pungent spicy flavor that mellows and sweetens considerably with cooking. Garlic is a fundamental component in many dishes in various regions.
Garlic has been used both as food and medicine in many cultures for thousands of years dating as far back as when the Giza pyramids were built. Garlic is claimed to help prevent heart disease and cancer. Studies and research have suggested possible cardio vascular benefits of garlic. It may reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. Modern science has also proven garlic’s antibiotic properties.
It is known for causing bad breath as well as causing sweat to have a pungent garlicky smell. Mouthwash or breath mints are not particularly effective since the sulfurous compounds are absorbed into the bloodstream and exit the body through the lungs and skin. However, milk can reduce Garlic breath.
Gilroy, California claims to be the Garlic Capitol of the world . Will Rogers was once quoted as saying it is.. The only place where you can marinate a steak just by hanging it out on the clothesline.
Celebrate the day by cooking a terrific meal with garlic and possibly attend one of the many garlic festivals around the world.
If you can’t see the bright side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Just drop some onion and garlic in olive oil, and your day improves exponentially .

Things like spaghetti and chili wouldn’t be half as good without garlic. I use plety of garlic in a lot of my cooking. I don’t always have fresh garlic on hand but I do have garlic salt and minced garlic in the cupboard. The real stuff is always better, but I make do with what I have. I always put garlic on a pork roast and love garlic bread. There are so many ways to use it.
Another dish I like to put garlic in is Homemade Sloppy Joes and that is the recipe for today.
Sloppy Joes
1 1/2 lbs. lean ground beef
1/2 onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 green pepper, diced
2 c. water, divided
3/4 c. ketchup
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp. brown sugar
1 tsp Dijon mustrd
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/s tsp pepper
Cayeene pepper to taste, optional
Place ground beef and onion in large skillet. Turn heat to medium and cook and still until the beef is browned and forms small crumbles.
Stir in garlic and green pepper, cook until softened. Add 1 cup water and stir, scraping sides of pan to dissolve any brown flavor its from the bottom of the skillet.
Mix in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard and salt and pepper. Add one more cup of water and return mix to a simmer until the liquid hs evaporated and is thick, about 40 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and cayenne to taste.
Hard to believe it’s another Sunday here and the 5th one now without being able to go to church. I continue to watch our church services on line. One thing this virus has braught us has been a greater need for online services. I noticed in a few cases that my internet has slowed down with all the use it’s getting these days. But I do remember the old fashioned dial up services we used to have and thankfully, this is nothing compared to that. It used to take forever just to be able to get on line.
Today is also my youngest sister’s birthday so that is what the pictures are of today. I was able to celebrate with her last year when I baked a cake for her and took it over to her house to sing happy Birthday! Sadly we can’t get tother today, but I have promised her another cake when we can safely do so once more. Happy Birthday wishes were once again sent out in the mail. I’m very thankful for our mailmen.
I hope you have a RELAXING Sunday!

Everything is different this year, even celebrating birthdays, but that don't mean they don't happen.
Happy birthday to your sister! hopefully soon you can celebrate together. We do use a lot of garlic in cooking. It does add a great spice to the foods. We watched our online church service today. Looking forward to getting back to the regular services down the road. Saw on the news this morning we could get to 100 degrees next Sunday!

Oh Pam, you're making my mouth water! And that Will Rogers quote made me laugh.
I don't recall garlic being a part of my mother's kitchen, but I've been doing my best these last 50 years to make up for lost time. Thank goodness my husband and son enjoy it, too. I never thought about adding onion and garlic to a container of olive oil -- that's a great idea! Some of those fancy oils can be a bit pricy. Hugs!
PS - Happy Birthday to your sweet sister! Nice to have something to look forward to when all this mess is over.
Happy ☺ Birthday 🎂
When we drive through Gilroy on the way to Monterey we roll down the windows and inhale deeply. So good. 😋
Oh I love Garlic... and I agree with William Shatner.. although I also need a bit of coffee and a whole lot of Jesus
Arent we lucky that our churches livestream their service. Tho it will be wonderful when we can get back in person and enjoy the Fellowship too
