ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
FOR THURSDAY, JANUARY 23RD,2020
The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Today is National Pie Day which celebrates pies that have a long and illustrious history, but the sweet treats we enjoy today are a relatively recent innovation. The Greeks and Romans made some of the first pies in history. People filled pastry shells with different kinds of meat or seafood, flavored them with a variety of spices and served them as part of the sweet course of the meal.
When the Pilgrims made their voyage to the New World in the late 1600’s they arrived with English pie recipes for beef, lamb, duck or pigeon. It wasn’t until the late 1800’s that the first sweet pies emerged. These featured the ingredients we’re accustomed to today and by the 1940’s pie had become the iconic American dessert.
Whether you prefer apple, berry, pumpkin or sweet potato, bake your favorite pie recipe.tonight in honor of National Pie Day!
If you can’t see the bright side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
We must have a pie. Stress cannot exist in the presence of a pie.
David Mamet
I do love pie and have a coconut cream pie in the fridge right now. I bought it frozen and just had to thaw it out. It’s hard to say what my favorite pie is but it might be Lemon Meringue. I really like a lot of different kinds. I like flakey crust and Marie Callender's has very good ones. I even like her chicken pot pies and keep them on hand for when I don’t feel like cooking.
I don’t make many pies these days but know who makes good ones and buy them in the frozen food section of the grocery store. Most of the time the pies I make these days are the easy kind made with Bisquick and called impossible pies. You don’t need to roll out any pie crust.
Todays recipe is for one of them This buttery streusel topped berry dessert is a winner.
Impossibly Easy Mix Berry Crumble Pie
for the streusel :
1/2 c. Original Bisquick Mix
1/4 c. packed brown sugar
1/4 c. chopped nuts
2 tbsp. butter
for the pie:
1 bag, 12 oz, frozen mixd berries
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 c. Original Bisquick mix
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c milk
1 tbsp. butter, softened
2 eggs
Heat oven to 325 degrees. Spray 9 inch pie plate with cooking spray. In a small bowl, stir together 1/2 c. Bisquick, brown sugar and nuts. Cut in 2 tbsp. of cold butter until crumbly, set aside for topping.
In medium bowl, mix frozen berries, cinnamon and nutmeg. Spread in pie plate. In another medium bowl, stir remaining pie ingredients with wire whisk until blended. Pour into pie plate and sprinkle with streusel.
Bake 50 to 60 minutes or until top is evenly deep golden brown.
We thawed out some here yeasterday and it will be warmer yet today with temps in the 40’s It must be what they call the January thaw. It surely feels good to be outside and not feel frozen. How ever we still had a lot ice on the driveway yesterday so I gave up on going for walk.. It’s going to be a good day to get the storage bins out of the shed and maybe finally get Christmas put away. We’ll see…
The pictures today are from New Years Eve a couple of years ago at DS#5’s house when we played the Pie in the Face game. What fun!
I hope you all have a GREAT day. Happy Thursday!
COUNTING MY GIFTS
Things that really matter are the things that gold can’t buy, so let’s have another cup of coffee and let’s have another piece of pie.
Irving Berlin
Counting at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for. There is truly is always something to be thankful for.

Almighty and eternal God,
Protect our military
as they discharge their duties
with the shield of your strength,
may the power of your love
enable them to return home in safety
that with all who love them
they may ever praise you for your loving care.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT’s
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

That had to be a fun game with Pie in the Face :) Someone was clever coming up with that one! I do enjoy pie but honestly I can't remember when I actually enjoyed a whole piece of one :) Usually maybe a bite of someone's. I do like Marie Callender's ones; they are so delicious and easy to prepare! Glad it warmed up a bit for you, Ma!
betty
These photos sure tell a story of FUN times! I've never experienced pie in my face, but wouldn't be opposed if it contained whipped cream. :) My favorite used to be pecan; nowadays I'd first go for egg custard or key lime. So-so-yummy!
