Life is a Special Occasion!
Hallmark
October 27th is Navy Day. This date was selected as it was the birth date of President Theodore Roosevelt, an avid supporter of the U.S. Navy. Navy Day is a day to salute all of the men and women who serve, or have served, in the United States Navy that helps to protect our country
On Navy Day, give some well deserved attention to your proud U.S. Navy, and to the sailors who serve our country.......Salute!
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!
Maya Angelou
I salute our Sailors today and every other branch of our military for that matter. They do sacrifice much to serve our country.
Did you know that the navy bean got its current popular name because it was a staple food of the United States Navy in the early 20th century. This bean could be packed on board ships in casks and stored for a long time without rotting or going rancid. As such, naval ships of the time, anxious to have a storable food supply, mostly used this bean as a staple to feed the men
I found this recipe online for Senate Bean soup which they say is served daily in the Senate's restaurant. Sounds like it might be worth a try.
The Famous Senate Restaurant Bean Soup Recipe
2 pounds dried navy beans
four quarts hot water
1 1/2 pounds smoked ham hocks
1 onion, chopped
2 tablespoons butter
salt and pepper to taste
Wash the navy beans and run hot water through them until they are slightly whitened. Place beans into pot with hot water. Add ham hocks and simmer approximately three hours in a covered pot, stirring occasionally. Remove ham hocks and set aside to cool. Dice meat and return to soup. Lightly brown the onion in butter. Add to soup. Before serving, bring to a boil and season with salt and pepper. Serves 8.
Two pounds of beans makes a lot of beans so I will be cutting this recipe in half for sure.
They say we’ll be having some rain here today through Thursday. Supposedly remnants from Hurricane Patricia. Good time to make some soup to take the chill off.
Since this is Halloween week I’ll be sharing more October pictures today and the rest of the week too. Some of them go back a ways… but do bring some good memories.
I hope you all have a TERRIFIC Tuesday!
COUNTING MY GIFTS
He loves his country best who strives to make it best.
Robert G. Ingersoll
Counting at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for. There is truly is always something to be thankful for.
3256. for our Navy and all the branches of the military that keep us safe
3257. for soup, it does warm the tummy
3258. for navy beans, a good staple that keeps well
Enter into His courts with thanksgiving — and in His presence is fullness of Joy!
58 Days Until Christmas
Start thinking about those activities, events, and traditions that mean Christmas to you and your family. Many make or buy Advent calendars to count down the days until Christmas. Your family may have an Advent tradition all your own, but one thing is for certain: it must be ready by November 30th.
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Almighty and eternal God,
Protect our military
as they discharge their duties
with the shield of your strength,
may the power of your love
enable them to return home in safety
that with all who love them
they may ever praise you for your loving care.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT’s
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

It is fun to go back and look at Halloween pictures from the past and then see how much the kids have grown over the years :)
Hubby's dad was in the Navy; I too salute anyone who serves our country! Hard work indeed.
