30 DAYS UNTIL FALL
Sunrise: 6:46 am
Sunset: 8:15 pm
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
It may sound corny, but August 23rd is Buttered Corn Day. Folks chomp away to their hearts content on freshly picked sweet corn on this culinary holiday.
The corn is way higher than an elephant's eye right now, and those ears are ripe for picking. Dip those steamed corn cobs into fresh melted butter, and you 'maize' see exactly why this August holiday is so popular.
Take 'stalk' of fresh produce on August 23rd, and enjoy Buttered Corn Day while it lasts.
Aw, shucks. Lend me an ear on August 23rd.
The story of the New World is the story of corn. Corn remains the foundation of modern agriculture in the United States.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Nature gives man corn but he must grind it; God gives man a will but he must make the right choices,
Fulton Sheen
Today's pictures are of our 3rd Sunday Dinner last week. We had lots of fresh sweet corn to eat as well as a birthday cake for DS#5. The cake is a favorite cake for everyone in my family and the recipe was given to me by a dear friend years ago. Her birthday is just one day before his and she often had one to share with us when we were camping together.
I found a recipe for Crockpot Corn on the Cob and I'm sharing it today. I haven't tried it out yet but it sure does sound good.
6 corn on the cob , more or less. 6 fit nicely, broken in half in a 5.5 quart crock pot
4 T butter, or more if needed
1 T minced garlic
1 t Italian seasonings
foil, use is optional, it still works great
Shuck the corn. rinsed to try to remove more of the silk strands.
Mix last three ingredients in a small bowl.
Place corn on foil, if using foil. It is not necessary to do so.
Drizzle each cob with a spoonful of the buttery mixture.
If using foil, finish wrapping corn in foil, and place in slow cooker.
Cover, and cook on low 4 hours or 2 hours on high (if you plan to keep the corn in the crock-pot longer on warm, make sure you rotate the corn occasionally to avoid burning.
Enjoy!
And here is the recipe for the cake:
Pistachio Bundt Cake
1 yellow cake mix
3/4 c. Chocolate syrup, add to 1/3 batter
1 pistachio intant pudding, add to cake mix
4 eggs
3/4 c salad oil
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup orange juice
Add to cake mix pistachio pudding, 4 eggs, oil, water and juice. Grease bundt pan and pour in 3/4 of the batter. Mix chocolate syrup in the remaining batter. Pour on top of mix in pan and sail with a knife just slightly. Bake at 350 for 50 minutes.
The cake is good with a little powdered sugar sprinkled on top but my family prefers to have it with chocolate frosting on top.
I hope you all have a fantastic Friday!
COUNTING MY GIFTS
To watch the corn grow, or the blossoms set; to draw hard breath over the plough or spade; to read, to think, to love, to pray, are the things that make men happy.
John Ruskin
I am trying to count at least 3 things I'm thankful for each day and then in 1 year's time I'll have counted 1000 gifts. I’ll be sharing them and giving thanks to God for these gifts each day.

Corn festival sounds wonderful--I love corn on the cob!I've only had it a few times this summer because several of the sisters I live with can't eat it. But when I have it--I totally enjoy it!
Mmmmmmmm I can smell the corn... I think I will make a carrot cake tonight... Happy Friday!! :)
Pam, finally getting around to playing catch up. It's amazing how behind you get when you are out of commission for a few days! I have enjoyed all of the photos and all of the thoughts, but especially enjoyed these pictures shared here on this post. Family celebrations are the best kind. I hate that I miss so many living over here in the UK. Hopefully it won't always be this way. I love corn on the cob, but sadly the corn over here is deplorably disgusting! Tinned corn tastes better than the fresh. Sad but true. Have a lovely weekend! xxoo
hi there on a Saturday morning. Glad you reminded me of that cake and corn? Have we ever had good corn so far. It is pure gold to eat. Love it that you have lots of birthday cakes, that is another blessing of a big family.
