55 DAYS UNTIL WINTER
Sunrise: 7:53 am

Life is a Special Occasion!
Hallmark
Today is Howl at the Moon Day which can be your opportunity to just cut free, do something wild and unexpected, and just let the wild in you out for an evening. The wolf has been a powerful symbol throughout all of mythology. Part time monstrous, part time noble, no other animal has been quite as controversial as the Wolf, but one thing remains constant throughout. Wolves are regularly shown as howling at the moon, and Howl at the Moon day is our opportunity to join them in their celebration of the wild.
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls.
George Carlin
Sorry I didn’t have a picture of a wolf howling at the moon, but I did find the cute cat and the moon for today.
There are many days I feel like howling. Not that it would do me much good at all. With Halloween only 5 days away, now just might be the time to let it all out. Sad to say we’ve got a 50% chance of rain today and we’ve no full moon to enjoy.
People in our part of the country are making a lot of noise though, about the Cleveland Indians baseball team as the World Series begins. I do enjoy baseball and wish them the best of luck.
The big clean out continues here and like last week I’m still concentrating on all the crafting supplies I have here. With the help of DD, and I managed to clear one whole rack of shelves last week. Maybe I’ll be able to clear another this week. Another bag of clothing and purses is also set to go to Salvation Army. There seems to be no end to it all. This time of year should be when I start painting and making gifts for Christmas using up those supplies I have and not getting rid of them. Life changes and so must we.
I hope you all have a WONDERFUL Wednesday!
WHAT’S NEW IN THE KITCHEN
There is a food holiday to celebrate every day of the year!
Today is National Mincemeat Day which celebrates a sweet and tasty meat treat. For those of us that have had it before, we can revel in the great taste. For those who have never heard of Mincemeat, it would be a good time to try it.
Mincemeat dates back to medieval times. It was a way to preserve food. It was also a treat, mixed with sweet fruits. Over the years, the amount of meat in the recipes was reduced. In older recipes, you will find meat or suet among the ingredients. More modern recipes contains little or no meat, and is largely a fruity pie. For many it remains a traditional pie at Thanksgiving and Christmas. A custom from the middle ages says that if you eat a mince pie on every day from Christmas to Twelfth Night you will have happiness for the next 12 months!
Little Mince Pies
Make plenty of them, since they keep when stored and are easily reheated to their original freshness. Serve them hot, accompanied by coffee, or eggnog, and wedges of sharp cheese. The young will enjoy little mince pies with mugs of hot chocolate and bowls of buttered popcorn, when they gather about the fireplace for holiday get togethers.
Short Crust Pastry
1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup vegetable shortening
5 tablespoons cold water
Filling
Mince Meat, homemade or canned
Sift together flour and salt. Add half the shortening and cut it in with fork or pastry blender until mixture is consistency of coarse meal. Add remaining shortening and blend until particles are size of a pea. Add water, a tablespoon at a time, and work particles together with a fork. Add just enough water to moisten. Press dough into ball, handling no more than necessary. Roll out thinly on floured pastry cloth.
Line patty tins with pastry, fitting it in lightly. Trim edges evenly, leaving an extra inch around the edge. Fill shells with mincemeat, homemade or prepared, heaping it in the center. Roll out pastry for top crusts, cutting around saucer or small plate of correct size. Fold rounds in half, cut several slits and place over filling. Brush edges of crust with water and seal with tines of fork. Brush top of pies with milk. Bake about 20 minutes in hot oven at 400 degrees, or until done.

I don't think I have ever had mincemeat before. Might try it diwn the road. Glad your daughter could help you with some of your work.

I am needing a good "howl at the moon" day. I'm with Betty, I've never tasted mincemeat. Doesn't even sound good to me.
