Today is Fire Prevention Day which exists both to raise awareness of practices that can help prevent these disasters, and to recognise the work of the fire-fighters who relieve them.
According to legend, on October 8, 1871, Mrs. O'Leary was in her barn, milking her cow. The cow kicked over a lamp, which started the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire burned for over 27 hours. When it was over, more than 300 people were killed, 100,000 people were left homeless, and over 17,000 structures were destroyed.
The Great Chicago fire sparked major efforts in fire prevention. Forty years later, the Fire Marshall's Association of North America held the first Fire Prevention Day. In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Fire Prevention Week.
The Saturday during Fire Prevention Week is Fire Service Recognition Day.

Firefighters save hearts and homes.

I found these steps for fire safety tips on line and thought they were worth sharing with you all today.
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.
Test smoke alarms every month. ...
Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.
If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL FOR HELP.
Thankfully I’ve never had a home fire, but accidents can happen and it’s always best to be prepared and know what to do should you have one.
It’s looking like a quiet day here at my house. I’ll be off to church as usual and then home to rest. A day just to watch the leaves fall. And that is what the pictures are of today. Lots and lots of leaves. They say a Sunday well spent means a week of content.
I hope you all have a RELAXING Sunday!
WHAT’S NEW IN THE KITCHEN
There is a food holiday to celebrate every day of the year!
Today is is Submarine, Hoagie, Hero, Grinder Day
A submarine sandwich, also known as a sub, wedge, hoagie, hero, grinder is a type of sandwich that consists of a length of bread or roll split lengthwise and filled with a variety of meats, cheeses, vegetables, and condiments. The sandwich has no standardized name, with over a dozen regional variations used across the U.S. Thus we celebrate Submarine, Hoagie, Hero, Grinder Day.
New York Submarine Sandwiches
4 hoagie rolls, 6" size
olive oil
red wine vinegar
Italian seasoning
12 slices provolone cheese
12 slices boiled ham
12 slices hard salami
2 sliced tomatoes
1/4 head shredded lettuce (or more if desired)
1 small onion, sliced into thin rings
Split rolls. Sprinkle liberally with olive oil. Then vinegar and then the Italian seasoning.
Layer 3 slices each of the provolone, ham and salami on each roll. Place sliced tomatoes, onions and shredded lettuce on top of cold cuts.
I think they are better made a day a head and refrigerated overnight. The flavors seem to meld together making for a very tasty sandwich.

Yum on the sandwich recipe. It is always good to have a safety plan in case of a fire, glad the fire stations provide education about it too. Sounds like you have a great Sunday planned, Ma, enjoy!

Fire Prevention awareness is so critical! Especially here out West the dangers seem amplified and each year my heart breaks for the forest animals.
When my DIL and her siblings were children, their family lost everything in a house fire. It seems so sad that she's only a few photographs remaining of that time. You always think it can't happen to you .....
