Life is a Special Occasion!

Today is National Thrift Shop Day. Thrift shops have existed in the world for a long period of time. People looking to assist others in their lives by offering cheaper prices on used wares. Clothing was originally the start of thrift shops, however it added furniture, housewares and even toys over time.
Going into a thrift store is never the same experience, and the heap of items changes constantly. Thrift stores get new merchandise in regularly, and stock rotates out at a fast pace.
Watch for sales and specials today at Thriftshops in celebration of National Thriftshop Day!
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
The scope of thrift is limitless.
Thomas A. Edison
Going into a thrift shop is like going on a treasure hunt for me. I love to browse through the racks and shelves to find a good buy. There certainly are a lot out there if you want to take the time to look.
I think my first experience with a thrift store was probably at a gently used clothing store. I remember when I went back to work after many years at home, I needed a new wardrobe and this store got me started without spending a lot of money
Being thrifty has been a way of life for me. Sometimes it was a necessity and sometimes it’s been just for fun. Some one’s trash can be another’s treasure.
I hope you all have a WONDERFUL Wednesday !
WHAT’S NEW IN THE KITCHEN
There is a food holiday to celebrate every day of the year!
August 17th is National Vanilla Custard Day!
My mom always made lots of custard pies, They were a favorite of my dad’s. Custard pies are good and simple to make too, but I found this new to me recipe that really sounds good. Although it sounds like a great dessert for a hot day, I will be saving it for cooler weather when I can turn the oven on. It won’t be long now as summer is fast fading.
Vanilla Magic Custard Cake
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
2 cups milk, lukewarm
4 eggs, separated
1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
1 Tablespoon water
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
powdered sugar for dusting
Preheat the oven to 325°F. Lightly grease 8x8 inch baking dish, set aside
Whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form, set aside. Beat the egg yolks and powdered sugar until pale yellow. Mix in melted butter and the tablespoon of water for about 2 minutes until evenly combined. Mix in the flour until evenly incorporated. Slowly beat in the milk and vanilla extract until well combined. Fold in the egg whites 1/3 at a time, then repeat until all of the egg whites are folded in.
Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 40 to 60 minutes until the cake is barely jiggly in the center. Baking time might vary depending on your oven or pan you use, but start checking after 40 minutes. If the top browns too quick before the minimum of 40 minutes, you can cover the cake with aluminum foil.
Cool the cake completely before dusting with powdered sugar. Even cooled, it will be slightly jiggly because it has custard layer in the center.

My gosh, that shoe you are holding, Ma. Too funny! I think that would be good for a costume :)
I like looking at thrift stores, so many bargains if one is patient to look at them all :)
betty
We only have a couple of thrift stores here at my hometown. And neither one of them have much in the way of good bargains. Maybe I would have to go everyday to get a bargain. But right now I don't need anymore junk at my house!!
