Life is a Special Occasion!

International Eat An Apple Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday in September. Apples contain no fat, and contain cholestoral-fighting compounds. That’s almost reason enough to love apples, but Eat An Apple Day goes even further to encourage you to celebrate all things apple related. Bake a pie, make a tart, enjoy a crumble or a simple, crunchy fruit treat.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
I love apples and eat them often. Did you know that apples are really healthy for you. Apples are an excellent source of pectin. Pectin is a form of soluble fiber than lowers both blood pressure and glucose levels. It can also lower the levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol in the body. Pectin, like other forms of fiber, helps maintain the health of the digestive system. Apples also act as a toothbrush, cleaning teeth and killing bacteria in the mouth, which may reduce the risk of tooth decay.
Luckily autumn is approaching and bringing bushels of fresh apples to keep us all in good health. Red apples are one of the most used fruits in our tables. They are very yummy and good looking and can be eaten raw or done in a variety of ways. I read an article that said instead of drinking coffee every morning, eat a red apple. It has the same effect on your brain as coffee, without a single mg of caffeine. I do love my coffee so I don’t think I’ll be giving it up anytime soon, but for those that don’t drink coffee this might be a good way to jump start your day.
One of my favorite apple dishes to have is fried apples. They are really easy to make and are delicious.
8 apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup of brown sugar
Melt butter in skillet. Add remaining ingredients simmer until apples are tender about 20-25 minutes. Serve warm.
The bottom picture in today’s post is of two of DS#1’s children getting ready to make apple butter. They cook up a lot of apples every year and make my mom’s apple butter recipe. We are blessed as we all get a jar from them too!
Hope you all have a Super Saturday!
COUNTING MY GIFTS
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
Proverbs 25:11.
I have counted at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for over almost 2 years and have now reached 2000 gifts. On my way now to 3000. I'm not stopping, but will continue on counting. There is always, always something to be thankful for.

Oh how fun to make apple butter, Ma! What a neat family thing to do together and I bet it is delicious! That is interesting about the effects of apples compared to coffee. I've been thinking of giving up coffee, as much as I too like it, so maybe I'll give this a try with the apple and see if it is the same.
