ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
SEPTEMBER 5TH, 2011
It's MONDAY!
HAPPY LABOR DAY USA!
Dedicated in honor of the worker, it is also appropriately called the workingman's holiday. The holiday is dedicated to you in respect and appreciation for the work you do in or outside of the home, union or non-union, big company, small companies, or government. As long as you work somewhere at something, this holiday is for you!
Labor Day is also viewed as the official end of summer. While the Fall Equinox is still a couple of weeks away, kids go back to school and summer vacations are over. So this marks the end of the season. Many people celebrate this weekend with one last picnic. It is also the date that many people close up the pool, and put away the boats
We need to value the everyday work we do, not just once a year, but every day.
HAPPY LABOR DAY!
NEW IN THE KITCHEN
SEPTEMBER 5TH, LABOR DAY
In culinary terms, Labor Day is the unofficial transition from summertime eats like melons, grillables, and corn on the cob to more fortifying fall food fare like soups, squash and more!
Cooler autumn weekends bring on bigger appetites. I love the fall weather, but I also love fall food! Sweet apples and squash, savory stews and soups, long cooked meats and hearty grains are some of my most favorite foods.
When our bodies are in harmony with the environment we live in, it runs more efficiently. One of the best ways to achieve this efficiency and balance is to eat food that naturally grows during each season.
There are so many wonderful vegetables that come with the autumn harvest. Especially root vegetables! The roots of any plant are its anchor and foundation; they’re the essential parts that support and nourish the plant. Root vegetables lend these properties to us when we eat them, making us feel physically and mentally grounded, rooted, increasing our stability, stamina and endurance. Roots are a rich source of nutritious complex carbohydrates, providing a steady source of necessary sugars to the body. Instead of upsetting blood sugar levels like refined sweet foods, they regulate them. Since they absorb, assimilate and supply plants with vital nutrients, roots likewise increase absorption and assimilation in our digestive tracts.
This is also the perfect time of year to incorporate winter squash, celery root, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale, bok choy, collard greens, arugula, Chinese cabbage, Brussels sprouts, parsley, pumpkin, lettuces, potatoes, onions, leeks, ginger and garlic. Also, smaller less sugar fruits like blackberries, apples and pears thrive in cool weather. And, this is a great time to incorporate heavier animal protein like turkey, beef, duck, deer, buffalo, pork and others.
When it comes to transitioning to fall foods, the best place to find out what’s in season is to visit your local farmers market.
Happy Fall Y’all! :)

AROUND HOME
A rainy day is the perfect time for a walk in the woods.

Today we'll be much cooler than we have been in a long while. They say that we may only reach a high of 67 degrees. Good thing I have some sweat pants and jacket here. Summer it seems is going out with a SPLASH! We had a lot of rain yesterday. We did get some dry spells and ate outside for breakfast and dinner. We even managed to have a fire and sit around it for awhile before the rain started again.
Ah well, it's been a restful weekend anyway.
Hope you are ready for fall and all the changes coming our way!
HAPPY LABOR DAY!
COUNTING THE DAYS
Weather is a great metaphor for life - sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, and there's nothing much you can do about it but carry an umbrella.

Happy Labour day ma! It's not a long weekend here this week. We had ours last weekend. I hope to be a better commentor this week! xxoo
Keep dry MA. We are experiencing a week of lovely weather after several weeks of wet. But we are not finished with the rain yet; look out next weekend.
Hope things dry up for you soon.
