ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
SEPTEMBER 25TH, 2011
It's SUNDAY!
GOLD STAR MOTHER'S AND FAMILY'S DAY, 2011
Since our Nation's earliest days, the men and women of our Armed Forces have demonstrated the courage and heroism that have come to define America. Across shores, in deserts, and on city streets around the world, extraordinary Americans have given their last full measure of devotion defending the freedoms we cherish. Their ultimate sacrifice is one we can never fully repay, and the enormity of the grief their families carry we can never fully know.
Gold Star mothers and families know the immeasurable cost of fighting for the ideals we believe in, and they know the pride that comes with exemplary service to America. On this day, and every day, we offer them our deep gratitude and respect, and we are inspired by their strength and determination
The name the Gold Star Mothers was derived from the custom of military families who put a service flag near their front window. The flag featured a star for each family member serving in their country – living members were denoted in blue but gold stars honored family members who were killed while in duty.
The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 115 of June 23, 1936 , has designated the last Sunday in September
as Gold Star Mother's Day.
September 25, 2011 is Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day. All Government officials are called upon to display the flag of the United States over Government buildings on this special day. The American people are also encouraged to display the flag and hold appropriate ceremonies as a public expression of our Nation's sympathy and respect for our Gold Star Mothers and Families.
Freedom is never free.

NEW IN THE KITCHEN
Wild Rice Week
Wild rice is the official state grain of Minnesota. This nutritious food grows there in natural bodies of water, and must be cooked a good deal longer than regular rice in order to soften adequately.
That's why there's a whole week dedicated to wild rice each year: there's so much to learn!
SAVORY WILD RICE
4 cups water3/4 cup wild rice, uncooked, rinsed and drained
1/4 cup brown rice, uncooked
1 tablespoon instant chicken bouillon granules
non-stick cooking spray
1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
1/2 medium red bell pepper, chopped
1 teaspoon stick margarine
2 tablespoons thinly sliced green onions
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
chopped fresh parsley, optional
Combine water, wild rice, brown rice and bouillon in medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat; cover. Reduce heat to low; simmer 55 minutes, or until wild rice kernels open. Drain; place in medium bowl. Cover to keep warm.
Spray medium nonstick skillet with cooking spray. Add mushrooms, bell peppers and margarine; cook over medium heat 5 minutes, or until bell peppers are crisp-tender, stirring frequently.
Add mushroom mixture, onion and pepper to rice mixture; mix lightly. Garnish with parsley, if desired.
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Lord, hold our troops in
your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us
in our time of need. I ask this in the
name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT's
GOD BLESS YOU!
AROUND HOME
How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!

For several years now I've had a BLUE Star Flag in my window signifying my family members who served in the military. Now that DS#2 has retired I guess I will be taking down that little flag. Thankfully, I am not a GOLD Star mother. I still pray for all our military and their families every day. And I am very thankful for all the sacrifices made on our behalf.
We had a beautiful Saturday and I'm hoping for another beautiful day today. We played some games in the afternoon and did one of grand'ma's crafts. Our Princess and I made homemade noodles and we fixed homemade cabbages and noodles with Hungarian Sausage. Several of our camping friends came for dinner too. It was a great Saturday at the campground.
Have a great Sunday all !
COUNTING THE DAYS
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me

My youngest son is in the military. Thankfully he has not served in any war zones as of yet, but it is early days. My heart breaks each day as there is another soldier who loses his life and another family who mourns. I pray for our soldiers always. xxoo
God bless our troops.
I love wild rice.
Happy Sunday to you, Pam. Many blessings,
Barb ♥
