ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
SEPTEMBER 4TH, 2011
It's SUNDAY!
NEWSPAPER CARRIER DAY
Newspaper Carrier Day honors everyone who is now, or once was, a newspaper carrier. The list includes thousands, if not millions, of people. Years ago, this job was primarily populated by kids, from pre-teen through approximately sixteen
This day commemorates the hiring of the very first newspaper carrier. Newspaper carriers date back to the early 1800s. On September 10, 1833, 10 year old Barney Flaherty became the first newspaper carrier. Benjamin Day, publisher of The New York Sun, hired Barney Flaherty to sell papers for his penny press. The only job requirement, was that he had to show that he could throw a newspaper into the bushes.
Now, few kids deliver papers anymore except in small towns. But, but the "Carrier Day" tradition lives. This job is now largely held by adults, many of them delivering the paper from their cars.
NEW IN THE KITCHEN
NATIONAL MACADAMIA NUT DAY
The macadamia nut, from an Australian evergreen tree, is considered something of a delicacy. It's also one of the few crops indigenous to Australia that has become a valuable export. Oily and highly nutritious, macadamia nuts are useful in desserts as well as entrees.
Easy Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies
2/3 cup macadamia nuts, coarsely chopped
1 package chocolate fudge or devil's food cake mix
1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/4 cup sour cream
1 egg
1 cup white chocolate, coarsely chopped
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Place nuts onto ungreased 15x10" jelly roll pan. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes or until lightly toasted.
Combine cake mix, butter, sour cream, and egg in large bowl. Beat at low speed for 1 minute, scraping bowl often. Increase speed to medium; beat 1 minute. Dough will be thick.
Stir in white chocolate and toasted macadamia nuts by hand. Drop dough by level tablespoonfuls, 2" apart, onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until set. Let stand 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheets.
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Lord, hold our troops in
your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us
in our time of need. I ask this in the
name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT's
GOD BLESS YOU!
AROUND HOME
We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles
Jimmy Carter
Several of my boys were newspaper carriers when they were young. Just like the mail man who delivers in all kinds of weather, the newspaper had to be delivered every day. We now have adults in our town that deliver the paper by car. I don't really think that as many people get the paper delivered anymore. I know that I don't. I read it online. It saves having to recycle the the papers in the trash. They used to stack up and we'd save them for paper sales. Our scouts used to do that for a fund raiser every year. I don't think people do that any more either as you can now recycle them right along with the rest of our trash that is picked up curbside weekly.
We had rain last night and it's supposed to rain more today. We'll be hoping it's only for a short time, not all day. When you are camping rain is not much fun at all.
Take good care all and have a wonderful Sunday!
COUNTING THE DAYS
When leaves fall early,
Fall and Winter will be mild;
When leaves fall late,
Winter will be severe
18 DAYS UNTIL FALL
Keep looking ON THE BRIGHT SIDE of things.
A little smile, a word of cheer,
A bit of love from someone near…
Love,
ma
