Life is a Special Occasion!

July 15th is St. Swithin's Day. St. Swithin was a beloved ninth century bishop of Winchester, England, who requested that he be buried in the churchyard. Some say to be close to the common people, whom he loved; some say so that he could enjoy God's gift of rain for all eternity. When he died in 862, his request was honored. About 100 years later, however, it was deemed unseemly that so holy a man should rest in a common grave. On July 15th the people attempted to enshrine his remains in his church. Legend has it, however, that St. Swithin caused torrential rains to fall for 40 days, until the intended transfer was abandoned. This is the source of a very old Scottish weather proverb regarding rain on July 15th:
St. Swithin's Day if thou dost rain,
For forty days it will remain.
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
When wind comes before rain,
Soon you may make sail again.
I think we’d all agree that we don’t need 40 more days of rain in our future. However, we don’t really have any control over the weather. So whether we like it or not it will be what it is. It has been an unusually wet July so far here. Many are deluged with mosquitoes and we’ve been warned to wear some kind of insect repellant when we go out. They carry the dreaded and scary West Nile Virus and several counties in our state have been tested positive for it.
Rain is needed and we are thankful for it. It’s just too bad we can’t spread it around to those that need it. There are places in the US that have draught conditions.
Other lore days in July include:
July 25 — Puffy white clouds on this day foretells much snow in the coming winter.
July 26 — St. Anne’s day — Rain on St. Anne’s will continue for a month and a week.
I really am thankful for each new day that comes, no matter the weather. Each new day is a gift and what we do with it is our choice.
I hope you all have a WONDERFUL Wednesday !
COUNTING MY GIFTS
Counting at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for. There is truly is always something to be thankful for.
2946. for rainy days and days of sunshine, each one is a gift
2947. for insect repellant, it could save a lot of discomfort
2948. for weather lore, fun if not always factual
Enter into His courts with thanksgiving — and in His presence is fullness of Joy!
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Almighty and eternal God,
Protect our military
as they discharge their duties
with the shield of your strength,
may the power of your love
enable them to return home in safety
that with all who love them
they may ever praise you for your loving care.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT’s
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
GOD BLESS YOU ALL !
ADVICE FOR TODAY
If the sky beyond the clouds is blue,
Be glad, there is a picnic for you.
A little smile, a word of cheer,
A bit of love from someone dear…
Love,
ma

That is interesting about the weather lores you mentioned here, Ma. I'll have to make note of the clouds on that day and then see what happens with the snow here for the coming winter. I have heard parts of the country have had a lot of rain this summer. I feel for kids who are off on their summer break if the weather continues to be soggy for them. It is so true that so many parts of the country are suffering drought, would be nice to spread the rain around if possible :)

In Florida, you never know from one minute to the next what the weather will be like. Sometimes it is raining like the dickens with the sun shining away!
I must admit I don't like bad weather...it makes me nervous.
Hope your weather is calm and serene this gorgeous day.

The weather forcasters really don't have a clue what the weather will be from one day to the next here. I don't even bother listening to them anymore!!
It's been kind of off and on with sunshine, and rain here.
My Grandpa used to say...Red sky at night..sailors delight, Red sky in the morning..sailors take warning. It's been tried and true for me!!
Hope you experience more sunshine out your way.
