WELCOME MAY
May is Foster Care Month, National Barbecue Month, National Bike Month, National Blood Pressure Month, National Hamburger Month, National Photograph Month, National Recommitment Month, National Salad Month and Older Americans Month
Today is May Day, the first of May is celebrated around the world. It has a number of meanings. In many countries it is a celebration of spring and the coming of summer. It is celebrated with many spring flowers, many of them blooming right in your own backyard.
One of the traditions of celebrating May Day by dancing and singing around a maypole, tied with colorful streamers or ribbons, survived as a part of the English tradition. Children would celebrate the day by moving back and forth around the pole with the the streamers, choosing of May queen, and hanging of May baskets on the doorknobs of folks.
We can elebrate the rich history of May Day by attending a May Day festival, listening to traditional maypole music, or bringing a bouquet of May Day flowers to a loved one!
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
The world's favorite season is the spring.
All things seem possible in May.
Edwin Way Teale
When I was young, we actually did have a Maypole at school to dance around and we made colorful baskets of flowers to take home too. I’m not sure if this custom is observed at all any more. I’ll have to check it out with some of my grand children.
Anyway there certainly is a lot of blooming flowers right in my backyard. The tulips and daffodils continue to delight me everyday and soon the lilac bush will be blooming. My rose bush managed to survive yet another harsh winter and leaves are appearing on the vines. The Lily of the Valley along the side of the house will soon be blooming too.
The long range forecast says that we’ll see some temps in the 70’s next week so I imagine the warmth will make everything pop out.
I hope you all have a fantastic Friday! Happy May Day !
