Three Chilly Saints Day
May 11, 12, and 13 are the feast days of Saints Mamertus, Pancras, and Gervais. These three are known as the Three Chilly Saints not because they were cold during their lifetimes, but because these days are traditionally the coldest of the month. English and French folklore and later American held that these days would bring a late frost. In Germany, they were called the Icemanner, or Icemen Days, and people believed it was never safe to plant until the Icemen were gone. Another bit of folklore claimed, Who shears his sheep before St. Gervatius's Day loves more his wool than his sheep.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Don't knock the weather: nine-tenths of the people couldn't start a conversation if it didn't change once in a while.
Kin Hubbard
I love folk lore and the reasoning behind it. True to form, we are to have some chillier days here. After a weekend of above normal temps in the high 80’s we will be going back in the 50’s and 60’s here for a few days. I didn’t see any chances of frost though and that is a good thing as I did plant some flowers outside in the containers on the porch and patio.
I could hardly believe it, but I had to turn the air on Friday night. The house was so warm I had trouble sleeping from the heat so I got up and turned it on. The good news is that it still works.
I’m a little relieved that after today, we won’t be staying so warm. I don’t like it when the house has to stay closed up. I love it when I can open windows and let some fresh air in.
The pictures today are of what I got planted. There are still a few more things I’d like to get yet. Not all my containers are full. I’ll be keeping my eye out for a few more plants and do some more planting. Most of the flower beds are filled to overflowing with things that come up every year. The planting I’ll be doing will be in the pots sitting outside.
Once again I have a couple of pots with herbs in them. I really enjoy having fresh herbs to cook with. The only things that wintered over was my sage and thyme so I got some more rosemary, parsley and basil. Those are the ones I use the most.
I hope you all had a wonderful Mothers Day weekend. I’d like to thank DS#5 and his family for taking me along to Mr. Wonderful’s t-ball game and a little picnic on the grounds on Saturday and thanks too to DD and her hubby for a wonderful Mothers Day dinner on Sunday. Of course I got phone calls and cards from the children and grandchildren that I didn’t get to see and I’m thankful for all of them too.
I hope your Monday is off to a great start and that you have wonderful week ahead!
COUNTING MY GIFTS
The year's at the spring,
And day's at the morn;
Morning's at seven;
The hill-side's dew-pearled;
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn;
God's in his Heaven—
All's right with the world!
Robert Browning
Counting at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for. There is truly is always something to be thankful for.

I always learn something new when I visit your page Pam! Now I know about Chilly Saints! I think your baskets and containers will be lovely once everything has matured in them. This is such an exciting time of the year when we are planting our gardens and such. So full of promise! Have a lovely Monday! xoxo
Sounds like you had a nice Mother's Day, Ma! I had not heard of that folklore with the Chilly Saints; very interesting! Our weather was chilly over the weekend, but supposed to be 77 today :)
I think it would be neat to grow herbs to use for cooking; we must do that sometime; I bet it is delicious when used in recipes.
betty
I started working in my pots too, today, but after a weekend of rain, the garden is sodden! Yours are off to a good start!
