ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
AUGUST 20TH, 2011
If you can't see the bright side of life, polish the dull side
It's SATURDAY!
St. Stephens Day
We commemorate St. Stephen, first king and patron of Hungary and the foundation of the Hungarian state. There are celebrations all over Budapest and the country. This is a public holiday in Hungary, so to honor my Hungarian ancestors and St. Stephen I'll be celebrating this date.
Stephen, István in Hungarian, was Hungary’s first king and he laid the foundation of the state by converting the nomad and pagan Magyar people, Hungarians, into Christianity.
Until the end of the 10th century the seven Hungarian tribes often attacked and robbed Western European nations. After a major defeat in 955, the Hungarian leaders decided to give up the raids, focus on settling down and found a strong state.
He received a crown from Pope Sylvester II and became Hungary’s first king in 1000 AD. The Holy Crown has survived the coming centuries and it is now Hungary's most precious treasure.
As a result of King Stephen's efforts Hungary became a strong state and a protector of Western Europe during the Medieval Age
August 20th also symbolizes a sort of closing day of summer. People get a bit of rest before the usual working days starting in September. School for the kids begins within 1-2 weeks after the holiday, as well.
NEW IN THE KITCHEN
It's Lemonade Day! Life is good!
Summertime Lemonade with Strawberries
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup boiling water
1 tablespoon freshly grated lemon zest
1 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 (10-oz) package frozen strawberries w/sugar, defrosted
Dissolve the sugar (1 1/2 cups if using strawberries without sugar) in the boiling water. Add lemon zest and lemon juice and stir well. Stir in 60 ounces of water. Put the defrosted strawberries into your food processor and turn into syrup.
Pour into lemonade and stir. Strain your juice and store in a covered container and refrigerate until ready to use.
Note: To make decorative lemon ice cubes but a twist of lemon in each cube before freezing.
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Lord, hold our troops in
your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us
in our time of need. I ask this in the
name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT's
GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
AROUND HOME
It is sometimes easy to look at what is negative and forget the good and positive all around us. This is especially true of young people. Perhaps they don't always get 10/10 when it comes to faith matters but they most certainly get many 10/10's when it comes to openness, honesty, generosity, kindness and a willingness to embrace what's new and challenging. This weekend over a million young people are gathering in Madrid for World Youth Day and where Pope Benedict will speak to them on Sunday. Such a gathering is a great witness to their journey and their search for something deeper than what life has to offer. Their energy and enthusiasm is better than any power station. Their sense of fun and friendship is touching. We've a lot to learn from them and maybe we need to give them more credit than we actually do. Today is a good day to pray for all our young people. We ask God to gently guide and direct them in all they do.
I heard from DS#4 again on Friday evening and he asks for continued prayers for his FIL. Stage 2 cancer was found and soon chemo treatments are to start. All prayers will be greatly appreciated.
COUNTING THE DAYS
The future is called perhaps, which is the only possible thing to call the future. And the only important thing is not to allow that to scare you.
Tennessee Williams
33 DAYS UNTIL FALL
Keep looking ON THE BRIGHT SIDE of things.
A little smile, a word of cheer,
A bit of love from someone near…
Love,
ma
