Today is VALENTINES DAY which celebrates Love and romance. In Ancient Rome, for example a bachelor would pick the name of a young woman out of a hat during the festival of Lupercalia. He would be paired with his chosen woman for the year and often ended up marrying her,
The tradition of sending romantic greetings on the feast of St. Valentine emerged during the middle Ages. St Valentine was a Roman priest who secretly preformed marriages for young lovers forbidden to wed. February 14th was also a celebration of the day the birds began to pair. Today Valentines Day is a popular occasion for romantic dinners, gift exchanges and weekend get aways.
Celebrate today and send a Valentines Day card to your loved ones.
Cards haven’t been sent here, yet. I will be putting them in the mail just today. I will wait to give some people in my family their card when I see them, but the ones that I won’t be seeing will get theirs in the mail. Sorry, the cards will be late, but if you read this post, I can say, Happy Valentines day everyone!
It is also Ash Wednesday today! This is a Christian holiday that marks the beginning of Season of Lent.
This period of fasting can start any time between February 4 and March 10th, and is traditionally a time of religious reflection and atonement. Ash Wednesday prepares Christians for Easter Sunday, which celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
One of the traditions for today is to receive ashes in a church ceremony. The ashes in today’s services were made from the palms that were used on Palm Sunday of the previous year. The ashes are placed on foreheads as a reminder of humility and sacrifice. Beyond being a symbol of penance, the ashes serve as a reminder that God is merciful to those who wish to repent. Today we can participate in an online service. It’s the perfect day to learn more about this tradition in the Christian faith.
We were created from ashes and will return to ashes after our deaths.
Ash Wednesday is often a day of fast and abstinence and will continue to be so today.
Thankfully the big winter storm that is going on in the east coast, went to the south and east and went right by us without hardly any snow. We’ve only had a small light dusting of snow here. Many on the east coast will have 2 to 5 inches or more.
Be careful and watch out for slick spots on the road. It is freezing cold out there. Our roads are fine here so as usual I’ll be bundling up and going out to do my shopping and will share the menu I made up for next week.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO YOU!
Happy Valentine's Day, Ma!
We've not sent or received any cards this year, but I still treasure the few vintage ones that my grandmother kept from the days when she was but a young girl.
I've not attended an Ash Wednesday church service since I was a girl, but the notion is tugging at me to do so this evening.
