THE BRIGHT SIDE

Decide to be happy today, to live with what is yours – your family, your business, your job, your luck. If you can’t have what you like, maybe you can like what you have.

Just for today, be kind, cheerful, agreeable, responsive, caring, and understanding. Be your best, dress your best, talk softly, and look for the bright side of things. Praise people for what they do and do not criticize them for what they cannot do. If someone does something stupid, forgive and forget. After all, it’s just for one day.

Who knows, it might turn out to be a nice day.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

I'm looking out the window
and the day is drab and dreary,
And I'm trying to console myself
by thinking something cheery
I know it's simply horrible
to get in such a slump
And I also know it's up to me
to get across the hump
And I realize I'm selfish
to mention this to you
For, gee, you might be feeling
a little 'low-down' too
but often when I feel like this
I tell myself it's true
That I am not the only one
who feels 'low-down and blue'
And just knowing there are others
who feel the way I do
Renews my sinking spirit
and keeps me smiling through
and know that it's natural
to take a 'spirit-dive'
Provides the spunk and courage
to hang on and survive
And while there are a lot of moods
that we can drive away
by looking on the BRIGHT SIDE
in all we do and say,
There also is a loneliness
that God meant us to feel
But, gee, it sure is mighty hard
to know which one is real
And I'd hate to be a 'sad sack'
who never saw the sun
And just complained that every day
was such a dreary one.
But I know that all the dark days
are just part of God's plan
We should accept them graciously
and do the best we can...
So I'll just keep on trying
for I know it's 'Gospel true'
there never was a cloud so dark
the sun could not shine through!

I send this little letter out each morning to all my family and friends and even to a few people that I've never met. Many of them send it on to others too. So in order to make it available to more people I post the 'brighter side' of the news here each day in this journal.

The letter began as an effort to keep in touch with my family as they are spread out in all directions. My family, friends and God are the most important things in my life.

You'll find quotes, poems and stories and even a few recipes included in this newsletter. I try to find something new each day to share.

The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Today is Veterans Day, also known as Remembrance Day, which recognizes and honors the military veterans who have served our country. It is celebrated every year on November 11th, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended WWI. President Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day in 1919, and President Eisenhower changed the name to Veterans Day in 1954. Similar celebrations take place all across the world.

There are over 21 million veterans living in the United States. Today we honor all of those men and women for their patriotism, and their willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good of our country.

Today, honor a veteran you may know and thank them for their service!

I have two veterans I’d like to honor today, DS#2 and his wife. They retired several years ago now and came home safe and sound from the war. But military life is not easy and they both suffered from divorce due to their duty to their country. DS#2 is now on his 3rd marriage and this one seems to be working like a charm! My DDIL#2 was also in the military and knows what it is like. They both served for over 20 years and deserve to be honored today. I thank you both for your service! And I hope to be seeing you after the first of the year!

It is my day to cook for the weekend and on the menu is:

Turkey Salisbury Steaks

Makes 4 servings

2/3 cup seasoned bread crumbs, divided

1/3 cup chopped onion

2 5 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp. A1 steak sauce

1 garlic clove, minced

1/2 tsp. dried basil

1/2 tsp. dried oregano

1/4 tsp. garlic powder

1/4 tsp pepper

1 lb lean ground turkey

2 Tbsp. olive oil

2 Tbsp. flour

1 1/2 cups beef broth

1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

1 Tbsp A1 sauce

1 can, 4 oz. sliced mushrooms, drained

In a large bowl, combine 1/3 cup bread crumbs, onion, Worcestershire sauce, steak sauce, garlic and seasonings. Add turkey. Mix lightly but throughly. Shape into 4 1/2 inch thick oval patties. Place remming bread crumbs in a shallow bowl. Press patties into crumbs, patting to help coating adhere.

In a nonstick skillet, heat 1 1/2 tsp oil over medium heat. Add patties, cook 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until a thermometer reads 165 degrees. Remove from pan.

In same pan, heat 2 Tbsp. oil over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth, gradually whisk in broth, Worcestershire sauce and steak sauce. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly; cook and stir until thickened. Stir in mushrooms. Return patties to pan. Reduce heat; simmer covered about 3 minutes or until heated through.

1 serving equals 1 patty with 1/3 cup sauce.

It turns out I had to use beef not turkey. I let mine simmer longer so the flavor melds in, about 15 minutes. Otherwise I followed the recipe.

It makes a delicious dish and I’ll be having this with mashed cauliflower, not potatoes. Bob Evans provided these already made at the store. They are much healthier and have no carbs.

our troops and HIS wisdom for their

commanders.

Almighty and eternal God,

Protect our military

as they discharge their duties

with the shield of your strength,

may the power of your love

enable them to return home in safety

that with all who love them

they may ever praise you for your loving care.
