Hallmark!
Today is Kindergarten Day which honors the Preschool education institution. It also recognizes the creator of the concept of kindergarten, Freidrich Frobel. Born on April 21, 1782, he created the first play and learn institutes.
The first such institute was created in 1837 as a social experiment for a child’s transition from a school system. His primary goal was based on the concept that children should be taken care of and nourished in children’s gardens, much like plants in a garden. The idea of children’s garden later became known as kindergarten.
In the United States, children attend kindergarten around ages 5 to 6. It is considered the first formal year of children’s education. This is a big step for any child, and surely a day no parent will ever forget!
To celebrate today, show your child’s photos of their first day of kindergarten and learn how proud you were on that day. If your child is younger, show your own first day.
If you cannot see the bright side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
All I really need to know….I learned in kindergarten.
Robert Fulgum
When I went to kindergarten, if was only a half day of school, Now many go full day. When I went it was more about play than learning. Now they are learning what I did in first grade and many attend preschool for 3 and 4 year olds.
We used to have rugs we took to school that we took a nap on but these days, they go out for recess. So much has changed.
Sadly I don’t have pictures of my children's first day of school, but do have some of the grandchildren on their first day of school.
It’s Friday and a day to cook something new here. On the menu is:
Sheet Pan Shrimp and Asparagus
Makes 4 servings
2 Tbsp butter, melted
2 Tbsp olive oil
1/4 crushed red pepper, if desired
3 Tbsp. lime juice, divided
1 lb fresh asparagus, trimmed
1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
2 tsp toasted sesame oil
Chopped cilantro for garnish
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil and coat with cooking spray.
Whisk butter, olive oil, crushed red pepper, if using, and 2 Tbsp. lime juice together in a small bowl. Arrange asparagus and shrimp in and even layer on baking sheet. Drizzle with the butter mixture and toss to coat. Bake until the asparagus is tender crisp and the shrimp are cooked though, about 12 minutes.
Drizzle the asparagus and shrimp with sesame oil and remaining 1 Tbsp. lime juice. Garnish with crushed red pepper, if desired, and or cilantro.
Making sheet pan dinners requires very little clean up and are easy to make. I’ll be having mine with a side of applesauce.
I don’t like using the crushed red pepper so will omit that from mine. I don’t like anything too spicy.
After a beautiful summer like day yesterday, we are supposed to see rain later on today and it’s cooling down again. We’ll be in the 60’s today and by the weekend, we’ll be down in the upper 40’s.
I hope you all have a FANTASTIC Friday!

Kindergarten is an important part of a child's education !
That's interesting about the origin of the word, Kindergarten!
I've few memories of grade school, but Kindergarten stands out. Yes, I remember carrying a little mat on which to take my nap ... and a little pint of milk.
Robert Fulgham is one of my favorite authors!
