Hallmark!
Today is the Boston Marathon which is the world’s oldest annual marathon and one of the most prestigious road racing events. People from all over the world come two Boston to run and watch the historic race.
Each year more than 30,000 participants race and more than 500,000 people attend to watch and cheer the runners on. It’s the second largest single day sporting even in the U.S. only behind the Super Bowl.
The Boston Athletic Association founded the Marathon in 1897. The race takes place the 3rd Monday of every April, which is also known as Patriot’s Day in Massachusetts and Maine. In 1975, Boston was the first major marathon to have a wheelchair division and in 2007 an intuition wave start. The marathon has distinguished itself as one of the top road races because of it’s traditions, longevity, and qualifications to enter the race.
In order to do the Boston Marathon, one must complete different approved marathon within a certain time period, and must beat a specified time based on age and gender. Just receiving an entry into the Boston Marathon is a huge honor.
Although the Boston Marathon is celebrated as a unifying and joyous event, it should also be considered a time to grieve those who were impacted by the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15th, 2013. Please join us as we keep the families and communities affected by the fateful events of 2013 in our thoughts today.
To celebrate, make sure to watch the event and cheer the runners on.
If you cannot see the bright side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
I would honestly say I’m in the turtle's race. My journey is a marathon.
Omari Hardwick
I’m not sure how much of the marathon will be televised but I’m sure we will see some of it on the news today. I’ve watched many times in years past and the runners are always amazing.
I am not much of an antlete but do enjoy the efforts others make. Their skill and endurance are to be admired. I’m like a turtle, sure but slow.
Today is my day to cook something new. I put the rest of the leftover beef roast in the freezer to enjoy later on.
On the menu for today is:
Smash Burgers
Makes 4 servings
1 lb. lean ground beef
1 tsp oil
1 tsp coarsely ground black pepper, divided
4 hamburger buns, split
Optional, Mayonaise, sliced American cheese, sliced tomato, dill pickle slices, lettuce, ketchup and yellow Mustard.
Place a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Meanwhile, gently shape beef into 4 balls, shaping just enough to keep together.
Increase burner temperature to medium high; add oil. Add beef balls and with a heavy metal spatula, flatten each to 1/4 inch thickness, sprinkle with pepper. Cook until edges start to brown. Turn burgers and sprinkle with the rest of the pepper. Cook until well browned.
Serve burger on buns with toppings as desired. I think I’ll be having mine with some onion, lettuce and mayonaise.
I’m splurging today and using whole wheat buns instead of my usual oatmeal bread. I will have some lightly salted chips on the side.
Burger season is just beginning. I love a good grilled burger done outside, but am doing mine in my cast iron skillet today.
I don’t have any pictures of a race to show you so I’ve shown some of DS#6 and family marching in a parade instead.
I hope you all have a GREAT start to this new week! Happy Monday!
COUNTING MY BLESSINGS
When I do the best I can with what I have, then I have won my race.
Jay Foonberg
Counting at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for. There is truly is always something to be thankful for.
11,227 for the runners of the Boston Marathon
11,228. for a rainy day to get things done inside
11,229. for a TV to watch

Life is like running a marathon!
Fortunately, we are still in the marathon! I have seen only the ends and the winners of the marathons we have watched. What thrill that would be to see someone I knew in there running.
Who can forget that awful day in 2013. I didn't realize there was a separate category for wheelchair athletes, but I'm seriously in awe of ALL of the athletes' abilities and focus. Sadly, even in my youth, I didn't possess either ... but I happily cheer others.
It's hard to beat a good burger. Smashed or not, they're probably my perennial favorite meal!
