THE BRIGHT SIDE

Decide to be happy today, to live with what is yours – your family, your business, your job, your luck. If you can’t have what you like, maybe you can like what you have.

Just for today, be kind, cheerful, agreeable, responsive, caring, and understanding. Be your best, dress your best, talk softly, and look for the bright side of things. Praise people for what they do and do not criticize them for what they cannot do. If someone does something stupid, forgive and forget. After all, it’s just for one day.

Who knows, it might turn out to be a nice day.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

I'm looking out the window
and the day is drab and dreary,
And I'm trying to console myself
by thinking something cheery
I know it's simply horrible
to get in such a slump
And I also know it's up to me
to get across the hump
And I realize I'm selfish
to mention this to you
For, gee, you might be feeling
a little 'low-down' too
but often when I feel like this
I tell myself it's true
That I am not the only one
who feels 'low-down and blue'
And just knowing there are others
who feel the way I do
Renews my sinking spirit
and keeps me smiling through
and know that it's natural
to take a 'spirit-dive'
Provides the spunk and courage
to hang on and survive
And while there are a lot of moods
that we can drive away
by looking on the BRIGHT SIDE
in all we do and say,
There also is a loneliness
that God meant us to feel
But, gee, it sure is mighty hard
to know which one is real
And I'd hate to be a 'sad sack'
who never saw the sun
And just complained that every day
was such a dreary one.
But I know that all the dark days
are just part of God's plan
We should accept them graciously
and do the best we can...
So I'll just keep on trying
for I know it's 'Gospel true'
there never was a cloud so dark
the sun could not shine through!

I send this little letter out each morning to all my family and friends and even to a few people that I've never met. Many of them send it on to others too. So in order to make it available to more people I post the 'brighter side' of the news here each day in this journal.

The letter began as an effort to keep in touch with my family as they are spread out in all directions. My family, friends and God are the most important things in my life.

The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Today is National Hard Candy Day which celebrates a sweet sugary treat that causes our mouths to water. We celebrate all types of hard candies, from lollipops to candy canes to caramels. It’s no wonder that hard candy has remained so popular all these years.

Hard candy can be traced back to Ancient Egypt, Arabia and China. Archaeologists in all these regions have found traces of candied fruits and nuts dipped in honey which is a preservative. There is also evidence that people stuck sticks to their canday treats to keep their hands from getting sticky as they ate them, just like our modern day lollipops.

It is said that the world’s largest lollipop wished 6514 pounds. Ashrita Furman and members of the Sri Chinmoy Center made it in August 2009 to break the Guiness World Record.

To celebrate today, enjoy a piece or two of your favorite hard candy!

Candy is natures way of making up for Mondays/

I always keep some hard candy around to suck on. In the winter it is often peppermints or cinnamon candy and of course candy canes. They are a refreshing taste in the dry cold winter when the indoor heat makes us dry. I also like to carry some in my purse for when I go out somewhere. And many restaurants keep some by their cash registers for their customers. So I’ll celebrate today and enjoy a piece or two.

Thankfully the week ahead is a quiet one for me as I need to get my packing done for the trip I’ll be taking next week. They have had some chilly weather in Florida too so I’ll need to pack a mixture of clothes. Not too many for cold days and quite a bit for summer like days. I’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors there and I want to be able to enjoy it all. I’ll be spending more than enough time indoors when I come home again.

I think I’ll be gone about 17 days all together so I’ll have a bag to check in and one to carry on. I won’t have to take clothes for every day as I’ll be able to wash clothes when I run out. Still I’d like to have a varied selection. It’s so cold here that anything above freezing will feel like a heat wave to me.

My doctor recommended that I take Vitamin D due to my lack of sunshine here, hopefully I’ll be enjoying lots of sunshine there and maybe build up a good supply in my system.

They have a pool with chairs to sit on and enjoy the sunshine. It’s fully enclosed by screen so no bugs can get in either. I’m going to soak up all the rays I can get there. I’ve made a list of what I need to take. Hopefully I won’t forget anything, which reminds me I need to pack my sunscreen too.

I'm not overly fond of hard candy but have taken to carrying a few in my purse. They're great when in church and I get a tickle in my throat. There's even a lady who always sits in front and passes out little cellophane-wrapped candies. These days no-one wants to be caught coughing in public, right?!; December 19, 2022 at 3:36 PM
