ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Life is a Special Occasion!
Hallmark
Today is Scarecrow Day! Scarecrows are built to stand out in the garden to scare crows and other birds away. The crops are out growing in the field during the summer months , so if your going to build a scarcer, the time is now.
Sometimes the scarecrow does his job quite effectively . The birds thing someone is in the garden and they stay away. Other times they know better.
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Life is populated with scarecrows-all those people and things that seem so scary and trouble our sleep. Isn’t it nice to know that most of them turn out to be made of nothing but straw.
Jerry Spinelli
Somewhere in the storage bins, I have a scarecrow that I usually put outside this time of year. I’m not building a new one, the one I have will do just fine. There have been a lot of crows out there lately, but my garden is pretty much nonexistent so they won’t be hurting anything at all.
The most famous of all scarecrows is probably the one in the movie, The Wizard of Oz. The Scarecrow believed that his lack of brains made him a pitiful friend indeed. On their journey Dorothy and the scarecrow encounter The Tin Man who feels that he hasn’t a heart, and the Cowardly Lion who feels he has no courage. However, by learning to accept each other’s differences and support each other on their quest, they prove that our weaknesses may help build closer bonds that strengthen us. In weakness, we learn to rely on friendships.
They say this will be the best day of our long 4th of July weekend. The sun is going to shine and the temps are to be in the low 80’s. It’s going to be a rest filled day for me as always. The pictures are of one of the very rainy days we had this week.
I hope you all have a RELAXING Sunday!
WHAT’S NEW IN THE KITCHEN
There is a food holiday to celebrate every day of the year!
It’s Anisette Day!
There’s a delicious flavor that not quite everyone appreciates, but most people are decidedly familiar with, and that’s the flavor of anise. Anisette is created by distilling aniseed, the seed of the anise plant.
CAN'T EAT JUST ONE ANISE COOKIES
2 c. flour
1 c. butter
1 egg
1 c. sugar
2 tbsp. anisette
1/2 tsp. ground anise
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. rolled oats
Cream the butter until very soft, stirring in the sugar gradually. Add egg, anise flavorings and combine. Sift together the flour, salt and baking powder, and add alternately with the rolled oats, making a stiff dough.
Form into cylinders or rolls. Wrap in waxed paper or plastic wrap and chill 3 hours or overnight. Slice 1/4 inch thick. Bake on on greased cookie sheets at 400°F for about 10 minutes.
COUNTING MY GIFTS
For today and its blessings, I owe the world an attitude of gratitude.
Clarence E. Hodges
Counting at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for. There is truly is always something to be thankful for.
5035. for scarecrows, that may chase the birds away
5036. for cookies, great with a good cup of coffee
5037. for friends and family, you all are the best

ADVICE FOR TODAY
The way I see it, a person isn’t nothing more than a scarecrow…The only difference between one that stand up good and one that blows over is what kind of stick they’re stuck up there on.
Barbara Kingsolver
A little smile, a word of cheer,
A bit of love from someone dear…
Love,

I have used anise when cooking carrots, but never thought of it with cookies. Could be fun to try. We might be getting our monsoon rains later this week. Otherwise lots of sun here.

Now that you mention it ... I don't recall my grandpa ever having a scarecrow on his farm! Nice, reading your vignette about Dorothy and her 3 companions. So true ... "by learning to accept each other’s differences and support each other on their quest, they prove that our weaknesses may help build closer bonds that strengthen us. In weakness, we learn to rely on friendships."
My paternal grandmother hadn't much, but each Christmas she'd make little hard anisette candies wrapped in twisted wax paper pieces ... whose recipe was a jealously-guarded secret. After she passed, my mom made it a few times. Yummy, as I recall for sore throat/coughs. Now, I've the 'secret' recipe, that's actually ridiculously simple; maybe I should post it someday!
Anise is a very old spice, used quite a bit in my mother's era (born in 1918). She loved anise cookies as well as candy. I love it too. Happy 4th of July, MA!

Oh boy Pam, you are plucking all of my taste strings with those anise cookies. My favourite type of cookies. I love the flavour of anise! I have never had a scarecrow, although we have made ones for Halloween for the children by stuffing old clothes and using jack-oh-lanterns for the heads. I have had tiny plant pick ones, but never a full size one. I love your thoughts on the weaknesses of Dorothy and her companions and how we can use turn out own weaknesses into strengths! God bless you! xoxo
