ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
The moments of our lives may be bright with possibility, dark with fear or sadness, or even plain everyday gray, but God's glory never fades. May God's glory shine into the exciting lights, upsetting darks, and boring grays of your every day.

Life is a Special Occasion!

Today is Don’t Step On A Bee Day which is an important reminder that the fate of the common bee lies in the balance. With bee numbers in some countries having halved in the last decade with no apparent cause, it’s vital that we take care to maintain bee populations, pollination and honey production.
Now is the time of year when going barefoot can mean getting stung by a bee. Beeware!
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
The hum of bees is the voice of the garden.
Elizabeth Lawrence
I have noticed that the clover in my yard is starting to bloom and the bees love to buzz around the flowers. I never go barefoot outside though so I really don’t have to worry. I’d never step on one purposely anyway, but it’s best to take care.
I do love honey and we wouldn’t have it without them. Matter of fact we wouldn’t have a lot of things if we didn’t have the bees. All sorts of fruit and vegetables are pollinated by honey bees. One third of all the food we eat would not be available but for the bees.
It’s that time of year when our fresh fruit and vegetable stands are open here in my part of the world. So I’m thinking that this week a little trip to one is needed. It’s amazing how good fresh out of the garden vegetables are. There’s nothing quite as good as a home grown tomato.
Today’s pictures are of coneflowers which really attract bees and butterflies and are a beautiful addition to any flower garden.
I hope you all have a GREAT start to this new week. Happy Monday!
WHAT’S NEW IN THE KITCHEN
There is a food holiday to celebrate every day of the year!
It’s Pick Blueberries Day!
The blueberry harvest begins in early to mid July. From a health standpoint everyone should eat plenty of these plump, blueberries.
It’s no secret that I have a sweet tooth so the following recipe is right up my alley
Blueberry Coffee Cake
For the Cake:
5 tablespoons butter, softened
2 cups flour
2 heaping teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup sugar
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup whole milk
2 cups fresh blueberries
For the Topping:
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
6 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
Sugar, for sprinkling
Softened butter, for serving
For the cake: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 by 13 inch baking pan.
Add the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt to a medium bowl and stir to combine. Set aside.
Cream together the butter and sugar with an electric mixer. Add the egg and mix until combined. Mix in the vanilla. Add the flour mixture and milk alternately and mix until totally incorporated. Do not over beat. Stir in the blueberries until evenly distributed. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
For the topping: Combine the flour, sugar, butter, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl and cut together using a pastry cutter. Sprinkle over the top of the batter.
Bake until the cake is golden brown, 40 to 45 minutes. Sprinkle with sugar. Cut into squares and serve with softened butter.
COUNTING MY GIFTS
How blest to sit in the fragrant shade,
In the hush of a summer noon,
To watch the bees at their happy task,
And listen their drowsy tune…

Oh I remember one summer when I stepped on a bee. Before I could get from the garden to the house my foot swelled up to twice it's size. I could not wear shoes for two days. The doctor in the ER told me that I need to be very aware of bee stings in the future. He said this is often a precursor to an anaphyalatic response. So far I've never been bitten again.
Always wise to avoid getting stuck by a bee! Can be very painful and fatal to some people if they are allergic to them. So true how fresh grown veggies always are so tasty!

I never realized stepping on - and being stung by - a bee was such a real possibility!
Our here, some hives are 'Africanized' and can be super dangerous ... to the point of swarming and sometimes killing humans and animals, alike.
Then again, I do love me some honey. I need to learn my bees and not be in such a hurry to murder them all!
