Life is a Special Occasion!
Hallmark
The first Friday in June is National Doughnut Day which was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to raise much needed funds during the Great Depression, and to honor the work of World War I Salvation Army volunteers who prepared doughnuts and other foods for thousands of soldiers.
The original Salvation Army Doughnut was first served by Salvation Army in 1917. During WWI, Salvation Army lassies were sent to the front lines of Europe. These brave volunteers made home cooked foods, and provided a morale boost to the troops. The American infantrymen were commonly called doughboys. Salvation Army lassies were the only women outside of military personnel allowed to visit the front lines.
Some say donut while others say doughnut. Does it really matter, though? As long as we get our sugary circular breakfast cakes every day. Celebrate one of the sweetest days of the year by commemorating National Doughnut Day with a donut!

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Never work before breakfast; if you have to work before breakfast, eat your breakfast first.
Josh Billings
I do love my donuts and though I don’t make my own, I enjoy the ones that come from the bakery or that I find in a box on the shelves at the grocery store. I always have some on hand of one kind or another. They often start my day along with my good cup of morning coffee.
It isn’t the healthiest way to start of the day with all that sugar, but really the rest of the day I do eat pretty healthy. My sweet tooth is satisfied for the most part and I stick to good the good stuff.
It’s hard to believe it is Friday already and that means I’ll need to be getting things done around the house for my company coming in for dinner on Sunday. Tomorrow I have to finish up the grocery shopping and make up some mac salad to go along with the meal on Sunday.
Here’s the recipe I’ll be following for Classic Macaroni Salad
1 pound uncooked elbow macaroni
6 hard boiled eggs, chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
1 green or red bell pepper, chopped
4 cups real mayonnaise
3 Tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 medium onion
Bring a pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add macaroni, and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, until tender. Drain, and set aside to cool.
In a large bowl, stir together the eggs, celery, onion and pepper. In a small bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, mustard, pepper, and salt
Combine in the bowl with the eggs and vegetables, and stir in macaroni until well blended. Cover and chill for at least 1 hour before serving. I always sprinkle paprika over top for a festive look.
I’m not sure if I’ve shared this recipe before so just in case I have, here is another old time favorite I’ll be making up for dessert on Sunday.
Strawberry Jello Cake
1 angel food cake, cut up in pieces
2 sm. or 1 lg. box Jello
2 c. strawberries
4 c. water
1 container of Cool Whip
Cut up angel food cake. Put in 9 x 13 inch pan. Make the jello according to package directions. Pour cooled Jello and strawberries over cake. Refrigerate. When Jello is set, spread Cool Whip on top. Use strawberries on top for decoration.
I hope you all have a fantastic Friday!
COUNTING MY GIFTS
I wake up some mornings and sit and have my coffee and look out at my beautiful garden, and I go, Remember how good this is. Because you can lose it.
Jim Carrey
I have counted at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for over a year and have now reached over 1700 gifts. On my way to 2000. I'm not stopping, but will continue on counting. There is always, always something to be thankful for.
1736. for donuts, they are very good with my morning coffee
1737. for those like the Salvation Army that serve others
1738. for Friday, always a good day in my books
Enter into His courts with thanksgiving — and in His presence is fullness of Joy!
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Lord, hold our troops in
your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us
in our time of need. I ask this in the
name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT's
GOD BLESS YOU !
Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.

A bit of love from someone dear…

Ahhh, thank you MA for giving me permission to have donuts today. Can I please change that order though to an oatcake? NO? Oh well, it was worth a try.
Have a wonderful weekend.
I didn't know about the Salvation Army and the donuts, Ma. That was interesting to read. Over the football season when son was getting up early on Sundays to smoke meat for the neighbor's football parties, I would always stop after walking Koda and buy a half dozen of donuts for him and hubby. Rarely would I have one because I always seem to think I need to watch my calories. But I think I might go out and buy one today on this National Donut Day!
