ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
OCTOBER 1st, 2011
It's SATURDAY!
Today is International Frugal Fun Day!
Frugal Fun Day is a day to enjoy fun activities that are free or very inexpensive. If you use your imagination, the ideas are endless. Go on a bike or walking hike. The Fall leaves are on display. Have a picnic in the park, or your back yard. Invite some friends or neighbors over for a garage party and dance. Go fly a kite. Pull out the those old board games or puzzles that you have stored in the basement. Play cards with some friends.
Here's wishing you a very Happy Frugal Fun Day.
October's birthstone: opal or tourmaline. October's flower: calendula or cosmos
October is Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month, National Bake and Decorate Month, Bat Appreciation Month, Celebrating the Bilingual Child Month, Children's Disease Awareness Month, Children's Magazine Month, Church Library Month, Class Reunion Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, National Crime Prevention Month, National Go On a Field Trip Month, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, National Cookie Month, Roller Skating Month, National Popcorn Poppin' Month, Photographer Appreciation Month, Positive Attitude Month, and National Chili Month
October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came -
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.

NEW IN THE KITCHEN
October is National Pretzel Month
With Oktoberfest nearly upon us, beer and pretzels enter the American psyche like at no other time. The three rings of a traditional pretzel are said to represent the Holy Trinity and have become a symbol, like barber poles, adorning and identifying bakeries across Europe. German home bakers who lacked eggs or lard could still bake this fortifying, dense bread with just flour, water, and a little salt.
It's National Pretzel Month!
Soft Pretzels
2 cups warm water
2 packages dry yeast
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup margarine, softened
1 egg
7 cups unsifted flour
Topping:
1 egg yolk
2 tablespoons warm water
coarse salt
Pour warm water into large bowl. Sprinkle in yeast and stir until dissolved. Add sugar, salt, softened margarine, egg and 3 cups flour. Beat until smooth.
Add enough additional flour to make a stiff dough. Cover bowl tightly with aluminum foil. Refrigerate 2 to 24 hours. Turn dough onto lightly floured board. Divide in half. Cut each half into 16 pieces. Roll each piece into pencil shapes about 20-inches long. Shape into pretzels. Place on lightly greased baking sheets.
TOPPING: Blend together egg yolk and water. Brush pretzels with egg yolk mixture. Sprinkle with coarse salt. Let rise in warm place, free from draft, until doubled in size, about 25 minutes. Bake at 400 degrees 12 to 15 minutes. Cool on wire racks. Delicious when served with mustard or cream cheese.
I've never made my own pretzels but sure do enjoy them!
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Lord, hold our troops in
your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us
in our time of need. I ask this in the
name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT's
GOD BLESS YOU!
AROUND HOME
There is no season when such pleasant and sunny spots may be lighted on, and produce so pleasant an effect on the feelings, as now in October.
Nathaniel Hawthorne
The month of October should be a fun one. DS#1 will be having his big 40th birthday celebration. Our Sweetheart and our Southern Belle will be celebrating birthdays, and we'll be having trick or treat at the campground. By the end of the month camping season will end and then the real preparations for the holidays will begin.
Without realizing it, I nicknamed two of my granddaughters Belle. Southern Belle is the one having the birthday and should not be confused with 'Belle' who was just born in September. So it seems we have the Southern Belle and the Northern Belle. How blessed I am to be a grand'ma' of 16 wonderful boys and girls...Now if only I can keep all their names straight.
COUNTING THE DAYS
Listen! the wind is rising,
and the air is wild with leaves,
We have had our summer evenings,
now for October eves!
