ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
THURSDAY, AUGUST 7TH, 2014
48 DAYS UNTIL FALL
Sunrise: 6:29 am
Sunset: 8:38 pm
Life is a Special Occasion!
August 7th is National Purple Heart Appreciation Day, dedicated to those service men and women who put their lives on the line and were awarded the Purple Heart for their bravery and sacrifice in combat. It’s a symbol of courage and dedication in the face of mortal danger. The Purple Heart is the oldest American military combat honor still in existence. The exact number of service members who have received the Purple Heart is unknown, but estimates place the number around 2 million with over 55,000 of those coming from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
If you can't see the Bright Side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Well done is better than well said.
My dad was a purple heart recipient. His medal lay in a box in his dresser for many years. It wasn’t something he ever talked about. It wasn’t till late in his life that he even mentioned some of the experiences he had while serving in WWII.
Today I’m honoring all those brave men and women in our Military Forces for all that they do for our country. I can never begin to say thank you enough for all they do. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!
The pictures today are of what’s blooming here at my house. The flower boxes on the front porch have proven to be a delight this year and the Brown Eyed Susans are brilliant this time of year. I’m never sure if they are Black eyed or Brown eyed, but I call them brown.
The Mystery Flowers, a gift from my mom, are coming up once more. In the spring we get the leaves and then in August we get the flower without any leaves. I really don’t know another name for them at all. They are pictured below. If you know, maybe you’ll let me know. I tried to google it but came up with no results.
Isn’t all life a mystery, just like this plant?
I hope you all have a great day! Happy Thursday!
COUNTING MY GIFTS
It is easy enough to be pleasant, When life flows by like a song. But the man worth while is the one who can smile, when everything goes dead wrong. For the test of the heart is troubled, And it always comes with the years. And the smiles that is worth the praises of earth is the smile that shines through tears.
Ella Wheeler Wilcox
I have counted at least 3 things every day that I'm thankful for over a year and have now reached 1900 gifts. On my way to 2000. I'm not stopping, but will continue on counting. There is always, always something to be thankful for.
1922. for flowers that bloom in the summer
1923. for our military, especially Purple Heart recipients who we honor today
1924. for life, even if it is filled with mysteries
Enter into His courts with thanksgiving — and in His presence is fullness of Joy!
