Today is National Cat Day which celebrates one of the most loved human companions of all time.  They were first domesticated in the Middle East’s Fertile Crescent as early as 12,000 years ago.  When humans relied on hunting as a source of food, dogs were most useful, but when the first agricultural societies emerged, cats became invaluable.  Domesticated cats became responsible for keeping grain stores free of mice and other rodents.  Today cats can be found in 34 percent of American households, making them the most popular house pet in the United States.

Pet lifestyle and animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige established National Cat Day in 2005. 

To celebrate today, show your appreciation of your cats or donate to a local animal shelter.  It’s the purrrfect way to show you care.

The pictures in today’s post show the cats that DS#5 and his family have.  They all happen to be black cats and should be especially protected this time of year.  Thankfully they all stay in the house where they are safe. None of them are outside cats. 

The only way I can tell them apart is that some are larger than others.  

I used to have a black cat named Spooky.  She originally belonged to my daughter, but when DD  left home, she couldn’t take her with her.  So she became my cat. We were inseparable. She’d often sit on my shoulder and stayed there when I’d walk around the house.

She was supposed to be an indoor cat, but would often try to get outside.  I found her once under the front porch and had to rescue her.  She couldn’t get out due to the lattice work enclosing the space under the porch, so I had to break that down and get her out.

She lived to be over 20 years old but it’s a wonder.

I no longer own any pets at all, I’m getting too old to take proper care of them. 

This is my day of rest and as usual I’m staying in and keeping warm and cozy. It’s to be a soggy Sunday here, with more rain and chilly temps. 

I’ll be streaming church services on line and staying at home.  I’m staying at home and being lazy.

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS

Please pray for God's protection of

our troops and HIS wisdom for their

commanders.

 

Almighty and eternal God,

Protect our military

as they discharge their duties

with the shield of your strength,

may the power of your love

enable them to return home in safety

that with all who love them

they may ever praise you for your loving care.

AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters and EMT’s.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
