Hallmark!
Today is Sweetest Day which is a holiday primarily observed in the Great Lakes region. It is always on the third Saturday of October. It is described by Retail Confectioners International as an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember the sick , aged and orphaned, but also friends, relatives and associates whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.
Sweetest Day has also been referred as a concocted promotion by the candy industry to increase sales of sweets.
This holiday commonly involves women giving their husband or boy friends candy. While it is not as large or widely spread as Valentines Day, It is still celebrated in parts of the US, despite persistent allegations of being Hallmark holiday.
Retail Confectioners describes as much more important for candy makers in some regions than in others. Detroit and Cleveland being the biggest Sweetest Day cities.
Sweetest Day was a promotion concocted by Cleveland confectioners in 1921. The Cleveland Plain Dealers October 8, 1921 edition chronicles the first Sweetest Day in Cleveland, Ohio. It states that the first Sweetest day was planned by a committee of 12 confectioners chaired by candymakeer C.C. Hartzell. The committees distributed over 20,000 boxes of candy to newsboys, orphans, old folks and the poor in Cleveland. The Sweetest day in the Year committee was assisted in distribution by some of the biggest movie stars of the day including Theda Bara and Ann Pennington.
To celebrate today give your sweeties a box of candy. Let them know how much you care!
If you cannot see the bright side, polish the dull side
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Sweetest Day reminds me that I have to thank the sweetest people in my life for adding sweetness to my life.

I no longer have a husband or boyfriend, but my sweeties are now my family, If I happen to see any of them today, I’ll be sure to share some candy with them. But more than likely I won’t be seeing anyone. Most of the time I am lucky to get a phone call and that is usually from my daughter. I am wishing all of you a happy Sweetest Day today, and I hope you get a sweet treat.
This is my day to cook for the weekend here and on the menu is:
Favorite Beef Roast Dinner
3 or 4 medium red potatoes, cubed
1 1/2 fresh baby carrots
1 medium green pepper, chopped
1 parsnip chopped
1/4 lb small fresh mushrooms
1 red onion , chopped
1 beef rump roast or bottom round roast about 3 lbs.
14.5 oz. beef broth
3 1/4 tsp, dried oregano
1/3 tsp. pepper
3 Tbsp. cornstarch
1/4 cup cold water
Place vegetables in a slow cooker. Cut roast in half; Place over vegetables. Mix broth and seasonings; pour over roast.
Cook covered on low until meat and vegetables are tender, about 8 hours.
Remove roast and vegetables from slow cooker, keep warm. Transfer cooking juices to a saucepan, bring to a boil . Mix Cornstarch and water til smooth ; stir into the cooking juices. Return to a boil; cook and stir until thickened. Serve with roast and vegetables.
Make sure to check and see when the roast and vegetables are tender. Don’t let it cook too long or the roast will get tough. and I found it unnecessary to cut the roast in half as it fit just fine. If all depends on the size of your slow cooker.
This will make plenty for me and I will be eating leftovers for more than one day.
I love roasts done in the crockpot, they are usually falling apart and very tasty.
It’s supposed to be raining again today, and I have plenty to keep me busy in the house. I won’t be going anywhere.
My wish for you on Sweetest Day may you be good and kind to yourself as you always are to every one.Because you are so special, in everyway. This brings you loving wishes for a happy Sweetest Day!
I hope you all have a SUPER Saturday!

Don't forget to give your sweeties some candy today and celebrate Sweetest Day !
Funny, we were just talking about buying a big bag of candy for next week's trick-or-treaters. Unfortunately, I've already done my running around and about -- so 'someone' will have to wait for a bit of sweet.
Reading your recipe, I think I'd rather have that than chocolate. Yum!
Thank you for being a SWEET friend!
WE just put if off another few days, buying that bag of candy that is for the trick or treaters. We do have some ner3ein the RV park. Some RV'ers are now home schooling and working from home (RV).
I do like sweets, but some how prefer fruits. There is one chocolate filled treat that usually comes on holidays, and I cannot remember a name right now, my SWEETheart just told me it is a maple filled chocolate. Love 'em.
Anyway enjoyed the post.
I am late getting here....
Sherry & jack
I didn't even realize that is was sweetest day - but that is okay - it was a good day.
