It's  TUESDAY

ELECTION DAY

General Election Day occurs on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. United States senators and congressmen are elected every two years, in even numbered years. The presidential election occurs every four years in years divisible by four as is this year 2012.  Elections held in odd numbered years are often used for local mayoral elections and other municipal offices and citizen initiatives. 

The Tuesday after the first Monday in November was initially established in 1845 for the appointment of Presidential electors in every fourth year, and in 1875 for electing U.S. Representatives in every even numbered year.  Why early November? For much of our history America was a predominantly agrarian society. Law makers therefore took into account that November was perhaps the most convenient month for farmers and rural workers to be able to travel to the polls. 

Why Tuesday? Since most residents of rural America had to travel a significant distance to the county seat in order to vote, Monday was not considered reasonable as many people would need to begin travel on Sunday. This would, of course, have conflicted with church services and Sunday worship. 

Why the first Tuesday after the first Monday? Lawmakers wanted to prevent election day from falling on the first of November for two reasons. November 1st is All Saints Day.  In addition, most merchants were in the habit of doing their books from the preceding month on the first. Congress was apparently worried that the economic success or failure of the previous month might influence the vote of the merchant.

George Washington is the only president who didn't blame the previous administration for his troubles.

The polls show that this year's election will be a close one and after today we'll know just who our next President will be.

I don't get into politics much but I do take advantage of my right to vote.  I'm thankful to live in a country where we do have a right to choose those that govern us.

I won't miss all the election campaign ads in my mail or those on TV commercials.  We've been inundated and I for one haven't based my decision on who to vote for by any of them.  May the best man win.

The  results of the test done yesterday show that our little sugar, AB, is not yet ready to be born.  And for now DDIL#5 will remain in the hospital.  I will keep you posted if anything changes.

Dear Lord, Help us as we prepare to vote in this upcoming election. Give us the knowledge needed to make an informed decision based on our beliefs and trust in you. Please guide those who are elected to office to respect the dignity of human life and the values set forth in the Good News you gave to us. Be with each newly elected official as he or she takes office and leads our country, state or city. Guide each one to do the best job for all mankind. 

Bless this nation and all the nations of the earth with wise and humble leaders.
