It's  SUNDAY!  

STATUE OF LIBERTY DEDICATION DAY

On this day in 1886, France gave the US the largest gift ever, the 22 story tall Statue of Liberty. To this day, it's one of New York City's top attractions, with tourists eager to test their leg strength on the 354 steps to the top.

President Cleveland formally dedicated the statue, saying, We will not forget that Liberty has here made her home; nor shall her chosen altar be neglected.

Lady Liberty’s torch was lit for the first time that evening.

The statue’s pedestal bears an inscription of a poem by American writer Emma Lazarus entitled The New Colossus, the verses of which are as follows: 

Give me your tired, your poor, 
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. 
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me. 
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

The words foretold the great wave of immigrants that were to file through adjacent Ellis Island, which opened as the United States’ main gateway for newcomers in 1892.

It is easy to take liberty for granted, when you have never had it taken from you.

Happy the man who thinks of his ancestors with pride, who likes to tell of their deeds and greatness, and rejoices to feel himself linked to their goodly chain.

While I've never seen the Statue of Liberty in person, I do have links to it as my paternal grandmother was one of the many that came to the US via Ellis Island.  She immigrated from Hungary.  Most of us have someone in our family tree that came from another country.    

Ellis Island functioned as an immigration station from 1892 to 1954. In that time, more than twelve million people came through its gates from places like Germany, Poland, Russia, Hungary, Italy, and Ireland. More than forty percent of Americans today have an ancestor who arrived in the United States at Ellis Island.

America was founded on an idea, the moral right of each individual to his own life, his own life liberty, and the pursuit of his own happiness. This is our heritage.

I hope your Sunday is filled with lots of that great R & R.  Take time to be happy.
