ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
DECEMBER 7th, 2010
If you can't see the bright side of life, polish the dull side
It's TUESDAY!
Today is Letter Writing Day. Take a few minutes, and send someone a hand written letter.
Letter writing is an almost lost skill. Most letters and notes nowadays, are on emails and instant messages.
Computers have changed a lot of things.
THINKING
I like to compare the holiday season with the way a child listens to a favorite story. The pleasure is in the familiar way the story begins, the anticipation of the familiar turns it takes, the familiar moments of suspense, and the familiar climax and ending
Fred (Mr.) Rogers
Today: Read your favorite Christmas story or Scripture passage
NEW IN THE KITCHEN
National Cotton Candy Day is today. Cotton Candy is a popular summertime treat. That being the case, why do we celebrate this day in the middle of December? Good question.
The Cotton Candy machine was patented in 1899 by William Morrison and John C. Wharton. They brought it to the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904, where is was quite popular. Cotton Candy is a favorite at amusement parks, circuses, fairs, and sports venues.
Cotton Candy was originally called fairy floss. It is made from Floss (or Flossine) sugar.
Cotton Candy Sugar Cookies
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup powdered sugar
1 cup butter
1 cup cooking oil
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
4 1/4 cups all purpose flour
Extra sugar for pressing cookies
Heat oven to 375. Cream together the granulated sugar, powdered sugar, butter, and cooking oil. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Add dry ingredients, (the next four ingredients) and mix to incorporate.
Roll dough into small balls about the size of a quarter. With a heavy-bottomed crystal vase with a decorative bottom, or other cookie press, dip in sugar to coat well. Smash each ball of dough so they are spread out and flat. Leaving an imprint and sugar.
Bake 10 minutes, until the edges just start to turn slightly brown. Do not bake too long. Cool on the baking sheet briefly then transfer to wire rack to cool the rest of the way.
Makes 5 doz.
PRAYERS
Please join me today in praying for a friend of a friend that is in the hospital again, for on going medical problems. I'm praying that they'll find a way to resolve the issues she is having.
God of love, give us this day our daily bread. Help us to be aware that those around us need daily bread too.
Amen
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Lord, hold our troops in
your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us
in our time of need. I ask this in the
name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT's
GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
AROUND HOME
Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love
Hamilton Wright Mabie
According to the weather man yesterday many were engaged is some pretty snowy road conditions here yesterday. Today may be more of the same. Snow made for a lot of fender benders and slow traffic.
Take good care everyone!
I was able to stay inside with the exception of a little snow clearing. I would say probably 2 inches here but much more to the east of us.
Doctors say if you shovel 5 minutes then you should rest 5 minutes. I didn't do that but I guess I should remember to take more breaks in the future especially when the snow gets heavier.
Wind Chills make it 5-15 degrees outside - Bundle up! And don't forget that in Ohio, the law says that if your car window wipers are on, your headlights should be on too.
COUNTING THE DAYS
As we struggle with shopping lists and invitations, compounded by December's bad weather, it is good to be reminded that there are people in our lives who are worth this aggravation, and people to whom we are worth the same
Donald E. Westlake
14 DAYS UNTIL WINTER!
18 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS
132 DAYS UNTIL CAMPING SEASON BEGINS
Keep looking ON THE BRIGHT SIDE of things.
A little smile, a word of cheer,
A bit of love from someone near…
Love,
ma

Wow, National Cotton Candy day and I missed it!!!
One year for Christmas all I wanted was a Hokey Pokey Cotton Candy machine. I got it but ya had to melt the sugar on top of the stove...very slowly and then spin it with the machine. It only made a little dollop at a time.
God bless ya sweetie and have a terrific day!!! :o)
