THE BRIGHT SIDE

Decide to be happy today, to live with what is yours – your family, your business, your job, your luck. If you can’t have what you like, maybe you can like what you have.

Just for today, be kind, cheerful, agreeable, responsive, caring, and understanding. Be your best, dress your best, talk softly, and look for the bright side of things. Praise people for what they do and do not criticize them for what they cannot do. If someone does something stupid, forgive and forget. After all, it’s just for one day.

Who knows, it might turn out to be a nice day.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

I'm looking out the window
and the day is drab and dreary,
And I'm trying to console myself
by thinking something cheery
I know it's simply horrible
to get in such a slump
And I also know it's up to me
to get across the hump
And I realize I'm selfish
to mention this to you
For, gee, you might be feeling
a little 'low-down' too
but often when I feel like this
I tell myself it's true
That I am not the only one
who feels 'low-down and blue'
And just knowing there are others
who feel the way I do
Renews my sinking spirit
and keeps me smiling through
and know that it's natural
to take a 'spirit-dive'
Provides the spunk and courage
to hang on and survive
And while there are a lot of moods
that we can drive away
by looking on the BRIGHT SIDE
in all we do and say,
There also is a loneliness
that God meant us to feel
But, gee, it sure is mighty hard
to know which one is real
And I'd hate to be a 'sad sack'
who never saw the sun
And just complained that every day
was such a dreary one.
But I know that all the dark days
are just part of God's plan
We should accept them graciously
and do the best we can...
So I'll just keep on trying
for I know it's 'Gospel true'
there never was a cloud so dark
the sun could not shine through!

On the Bright Side Newsletter

I send this little letter out each morning to all my family and friends and even to a few people that I've never met. Many of them send it on to others too. So in order to make it available to more people I post the 'brighter side' of the news here each day in this journal.

The letter began as an effort to keep in touch with my family as they are spread out in all directions. My family, friends and God are the most important things in my life.

You'll find quotes, poems and stories and even a few recipes included in this newsletter. I try to find something new each day to share.

In a world that very often publishes only the dark side of things I felt that others would be encouraged to hear about

It's SATURDAY!

SANTA'S LIST DAY

Yes, Santa has a list. He knows whether you've been naughty or nice and today he's compiling the names for who gets presents and who gets coal. Do you know what list you are on?

Santa told us that doing extra chores, or something special to help out around the house between now and Christmas, will get you off the Naughty list, and onto the Nice list.

I hope you are all on the Nice list

THINKING

A candymaker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would be a witness, so he make the Christmas Candy cane. He incorporated several symbols for the birth, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ.
He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy. White to symbolize the Virgin Birth and the sinless nature of Jesus; and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock, the foundation of the Church, and firmness of the promises of God.
The candymaker make the candy in the form of a J to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to earth as our Saviour. It could also represent the staff of the Good Shepherd with which He reaches down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray.
Thinking that the candy was somewhat plain, the candymaker stained it with red stripes. He used three small stripes to show the stripes of the scourging Jesus received by which we are healed. The large red stripe was for the blood shed by Christ on the cross so that we could have the promise of eternal life.
Unfortunately, the candy became know as a candy cane - a meaningless decoration seen at Christmas time. But the meaning is still there for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. I pray that this symbol will again be used to witness TO THE WONDER OF JESUS AND HIS GREAT LOVE that came down at Christmas and remains the ultimate and dominate force in the Universe today.

NEW IN THE KITCHEN

This is the time of year for baking. National Cookie day is a call to bake your Christmas cookies now, in time for holiday parties and entertaining guests.

DELECTABLES

1/2 cup Butter; softened
2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
1 teaspoon Vanilla
1 cup All-purpose flour
1 cup Finely chopped diamond walnuts
Powdered sugar

Cream together butter, sugar and vanilla. Gradually blend in flour to make a stiff dough, then mix in walnuts. Shape into 1 inch balls; chill.

Place on baking sheets and bake at 350 degrees F. for 15 to 18 minutes or until firm to touch but not brown. Roll gently in powdered sugar and set on wire rack. When cold, roll again in sugar.

Makes 3 dozen

Dear Lord, thank You for our families. We grateful for so many things, and one of those is family who loves us enough to want to be with us. Help us to share our needs with our loved ones, and to do it with grace and gentleness. Help us not to take it personal as they struggle with change. Help us to bend and grow. Help us to be thankful every day for all that we have been given.

AROUND HOME

I read that you can pop a bowl of popcorn the cheap and easy way by adding a quarter cup of popcorn kernels to a brown paper lunch bag. You fold the top of the bag over 2 or 3 times and then microwave for 2 minutes. My microwave seems to take a little longer. I just listened for the popcorn to stop popping and took it out. Be careful opening the bag up. It is hot!

Popcorn is one of my favorite things and it's a great time of year to make a nice garland for your tree using popcorn. You can even string a garland outside for the birds to eat too. I ate mine...with a little popcorn season salt on it.
