If you can't see the bright side of life, polish the dull side

It's SUNDAY!

And it is Wear Something Gaudy Day

It is your chance to really stick out in a crowd.

The word gaudy refers to something bright, gay, cheap, showy, outlandish, or otherwise not in good taste.

Have a little fun on this day. For just one day, forego fashion and style. Look for something to wear that's really wild and wacky, and will stick out like a sore thumb wherever you go.

The roots of this day go back to the hit 1970's television comedy show Three's Company. Larry Dallas (played by Richard Kline), one of the characters on the show, declared a Wear Something Gaudy Day.

THINKING

Wearing a ribbon is a visual way to show your activism in support of a cause or belief. Showing courage to take a stand, no matter what any one else thinks. A ribbon on a lapel is a commitment that promotes awareness , shows patriotism, gets attention, and makes a statement.

Pink ribbons are for breast cancer awareness, teal for ovarian cancer, and gray for prostate cancer. A white ribbon shows concern for violence against women . Orange is racial tolerance, purple for religious tolerance. The gray ribbon "represented the color of the ashes and the dust that cover Manhattan after the destruction of the World Trade Center.

There's a ribbon for every color and a color for every cause. The ribbons are easy to make. All you need is ribbon, a small safety pin, and needle and thread.

NEW IN THE KITCHEN

Today is National Pasta Day

It's the day to get your carb on. Entire nations base their cuisine on this tasty staple so it can't be all bad, can it?

Here are some favorite tried and true pasta/ sauce combos:

Angel hair – with a light pomodoro sauce and tons of fresh basil and grated parmigano cheese

Farfalle – with a light cream sauce with mushrooms and peas

Campanelle- with exotic mushrooms and a creamy, tangy mascapone cheese

Cavatelli – Fresh and chunky spicy tomato sauce

Manicotti - filled with four cheese topped with tomato sauce and baked to perfection

Orecchiette – tossed simply with olive oil, broccoli rabe and ground Italian sausage

Penne frigate – , perfect with almost any sauce

Ravioli- filled with cheese or meat classically but also loving the mushroom options now available

Spaghetti – the perfect choice for nearly any sauce, or it can be used to make casseroles or stir-fry dishes. Go beyond tomato sauce and see what your favorite becomes.

Tortellini- perfect in a traditional Italian soup

Not listed below but undeniable with bolognese sauce are fettuccine or pappadelle

In times of difficulty, Lord, we appreciate the support and encouragement of others. In better times we feel stronger and more secure. Remind us then to cooperate with other people and look out for the needs of others, being ready to offer a smile, a word, and other support and encouragement

Even during October nature can still radiates color and energy. Soon the days will be very dreary indeed and I will be missing the brilliant oranges, reds, and yellows. The color in the trees wasn't as pretty as I was hoping when I went to the camper yesterday. A lot of trees have already lost their leaves and some are even still green. I forgot the camera so no new pictures for you all today.

After all our work yesterday, we all went out to dinner at the little place down the road from the camper. DS#1 and family and DD and her hubby and I. They had a prime rib dinner special for Sweetest Day so I had that and it was very good.

I had to leave soon as I ate though so I could get home before dark. These old eyes of mine just do not see well at night anymore. I made it home just as things were getting pitch dark so that was a good thing.

There are still a few things in the car to unload but it'll get done today. I got about halfway last night and was too pooped to continue.
