NEW IN THE KITCHEN
We eat what we can and what we can’t we can
Today we celebrate Canned Foods day. Nicolas Appert, who was born this day in 1752, was the one who invented the canning process. In 1812 he was bestowed with the title, Benefactor of Humanity. Just think, we still use his methods of food preservation today! Another invention of Appert’s was the bouillon cube. It was probably the first instant soup. Just add water.
Soups are one of my favorite canned foods and there are many tasty things you can make using them. I got this recipe from Marie who has a food blog called the English Kitchen. I made it recently and it was very good
Chili Weenie Pasta Pot
This recipe is a real timesaver and unique in that the pasta actually cooks in the sauce on top of the stove. You get the delicious smoky flavour from the wieners, which goes very well with the rich, cheesey and slightly spicy tomato sauce. Children really love this, both big and small!
2 (295g) tins of condensed tomato soup (MUST be the condensed type of soup that you have to add water to)
2 1/2 cups water
1 (420g) tin of cooked red kidney beans, drained well and rinsed
1 pound package of frankfurters, sliced into bite sized pieces
8 ounces of farfelle pasta
2 tsp mild chilli powder
1 TBS parsley flakes
2 cups of grated cheese (medium cheddar, edam or gouda)
salt and black pepper to taste
Spray cooking spray on the bottom of a large skillet that has a lid. Heat over medium high heat until hot and add the cut up frankfurters. Cook, stirring until nicely browned. (I also added about 1/2 cup of chopped onion and browned that with the franks ). Add the remaining ingredients, except for the cheese. Stir well and then reduce the heat to medium low. Cover and let cook and simmer until the pasta is cooked and tender, about 15 to 17 minutes. Add the cheese, stirring it in until it is melted into the sauce. Taste and add some salt and pepper, if needed. (I never add any) Serve hot, in bowls, with some slices of buttered toast on the side.
PRAYERS
Lord, Inspire me to grow in the ability to understand others and think as generously of them as I would like them to think of me.
Amen
Please pray for God's protection of
our troops and HIS wisdom for their
commanders.
Lord, hold our troops in
your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us
in our time of need. I ask this in the
name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
AND bless our Police Officers, Firefighters
and Paramedics and EMT's
GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
AROUND HOME
We can do no great things, only small things with great love.
Mother Teresa
There is a new flea market opening up here in our town. It's going to be where the old south side mall was. I'm hoping to go look around there this weekend. If I find anything I'll let you know. One thing about places like that is you just never know what they might have.
FAMILY
If you have much, give of your wealth; if you have little, give of your heart.
Arabian Proverb
My grandbabes surely do steal this grand'ma's heart. It was a joy having Mr. Wonderful here at my house for a while yesterday. I'll be watching him off and on while his Mom goes back to work. I am thrilled that I'll get to spend time with him. It looks like he'll be here every other week. Next week his other grandmother will be watching him. He's almost 2 months old now and changes more every day. Babies are delightful.
DS#5 and his wife, the parents of Mr. Wonderful both came over to pick him up Friday afternoon and DD and her hubby stopped over to see them too. So my Friday afternoon got busy. We sat on the sunny patio with the baby for awhile too and when I was outside my old camping buddy stopped by leaving some shirts for us for camping and some tea and I missed seeing her. I didn't discover the bag sitting right inside my door till everyone was leaving. So sorry to have missed her.
